Hi, everyone,

It is so exciting to see the MARC Times Racing News name once again featured on the cover of an auto-racing newspaper. I have been around motorsports for as long as I can remember and have been writing for most of my life. Dick and Pat Beebe gave me the opportunity to write a weekly column interviewing race drivers way back in 1990 while I was competing in the MARC Times Racing News & Beebe Signs sponsored quarter-midget. I was only 9 years old, and, to this day, I wonder how Pat had the patience to edit me.

Nearly 20 years later, my competitive days are over, and I am still excited to be writing a weekly column. In 2008 after the untimely cessation of printing of the MARC Times, Terry Fitzwater allowed me a place to continue my writing by becoming part of the Michigan Racing Scene. Now here we are a year later with a great enthusiastic publisher taking the helm for both publications and resurrecting the ideals behind regional auto-racing news coverage.

For me, racing isn’t just a hobby or summer fun, it is a community, a group of people with the same passion and a desire to see the sport flourish.  We all may have different favorites at the local circle track or enjoy completely different forms of the sport altogether, but somehow when the checkered flag flies or the end of the quarter-mile is reached, we are all cheering the same.   That is the true heart of motorsports and what I enjoy most.

As a board member of the Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame, I am given the opportunity to help honor and work with individuals from all different forms of competition, and it has truly broadened my horizons. I love to watch everything from stock-car action to open-wheel excitement to the thrilling quarter-mile to the backroads where rally cars fly.

Dick Beebe has always been a big part of my life and instrumental in me becoming a diverse fan, and in recent months he often told me how excited he was to see Patrick McNamara take over the name he worked so hard to build over the past 43 years. This new venture is giving us race fans back a product and name that has been trusted for so long, and is giving competitors and tracks the recognition they deserve. Although Dick sadly will not see the finished product from an earthly vantage point, I am sure he is looking down on and smiling that big toothy smile with his blue eyes twinkling at this first issue, knowing that in your hands is all the passion and determination he had always put into publishing the MARC Times Racing News.

Thank you so much for reading. May you enjoy future issues as much as I will! Don’t forget to “Keep up with the Times” and be part of the “Racing Scene”.
