Standing in the new Bailey Tower at Merritt Speedway ... press conference just finished with the 2008 Track Champions in attendance.
We have interviews being posted at MichiganCircleTrack.com with Jeff Kohn, David Hilliker, Terry Scourf, Justin Robinson, Rail Rokos, and more ...
The track looks super fast and is very tacky ... there is going to be some unbelievable racing action on Merritt's smooth and fast 3/8th mile oval.
Jeep Van Wormer pulled in about 30 minutes ago and will be joining the frey.
T-Mac was not able to get medical clearance to travel, so he isn't in attendance.
Poor Paul Zimmerman is making the rounds, as well as Gene Hendrickson.
Trevor Hollis and the ROTW crew are hard at work getting the show ready to air.
(practice session)
NOTES : Justin Robinson lost a motor in practice. Frank Seder discovered a motor problem loading the car and is scrambling to make the show. Alan Vochaska and Mike Nuggent were no-shows.
The track started off tacky, but it dried out fairly quickly and the earlier qualifiers ended up with way better times then some of the bigger names who went later.
Top Qualifiers were Rob Harden #152, Andy Chester #96 and Ryan Vanderveen #23V![]()
The early heats were won by Adam Thrush, Andy Chester, Ryan Vanderveen, Mark Andersen, Wayne Chinn and Brian Ruhlman.
After the heats, a lot of water was added to the track and a long run it session followed.
The track came out heavy, wide and very fast.
In the first semi-feature, Dona Marcouiller gave everyone a glimspe into the future as he dominated the first semi-feature.
In the second semi-feature, Jeep Vanwormer let everyone know why he's running the national tour, as he also put a beat-down on the field in the 2nd semi.
The third semi-feature was much more closely contested with Don Marcouiller and Don Erickson going at it with Don taking the checkers
In the feature, on the first lap trying to make a big move to the front Jeep Vanwormer nearly slid off the top of turn one and fell from 6th to the back of the pack. Ruhlman led the first lap, but by lap five it was Wayne Chinn leading the field.
(champions race)
Chinn would pull out to nearly a half lap lead by lap 10 ... but slowly the trio of Hilliker, Ruhlman and Marcoullier started reeling him in.
Shortly before half way, a yellow was thrown and the field was bunched back up. At this point, Vanwormer has made his way back up into the Top 10 and Hilliker, Ruhlman and Marcoullier were nose-to-tail ready to attack the leader.
Hilliker would make a charge to the outside on the drop of the green, but got squeezed high by the No. 6M, dropping him back to fourth.. Ruhlman would stick a nose under Chinn and briefly smell the lead, but Chinn fought back and recovered the lead.
At that point, Dona kicked it into high gear, made the pass on Chinn and basically ran off, taking home the checkered flag and becoming the third winner of the Who 55.
