img_8736e_cropThe Sunoco American Late Model series made its way to Hartford Motor Speedway on 7/31/09 for the running of the Lane 45.  The event was also sanctioned by the Canadian Dirt Late Model Association and the Talledaga of Dirt saw 35 Late Models battle it out over 45 laps for a $4500 to win purse presented by Lane Automotive and K&N Filters.

JR Hotovy in his No. 13 car and Alan Vochaska in his No. 34 car worked their way to the front, Hotovy overtaking Shawn Toczek on lap 11 and commencing on lap 14, the two went to battle over the lead.

Side-by-side, door-to-door, the No. 13 and the No. 34 would go at it, turning laps nearly a quarter second faster then the rest of the field, by lap 35 they had stretched out nearly a straight away lead on the 3rd place car.

The 45 lap feature was double the traditional Hartford Motor Speedway Late Model Feature and the added distance might have contributed to the feature's twist ending.

img_3481e_fixedWith seven laps remaining in the event, JR's car would come up lame (battery failure) and the No. 13 would fall off the pace, with the No. 34 of Alan Vochaska right there to capitalize on Hotovy's misfortune.

Vochaska would lead the final seven laps, holding of Brian Ruhlman and Jon Henry to take home the $4500 Feature Winning Prize.

Following the race, Voshaska said "we started 7th and kind of shook our way out front.  JR was right there and we had a great, great battle..  man that was fun.  Its too bad he came up lame, that would have been one heck of an ending."

The Lane 45 presented by K&N Air Filters is sponsored of course by the fine folks at Lane Automotive and Vochaska said that made the event even more special to him.  "George and Doug are amazing people and they are supporter supporters of racing and do more for us then anyone else.  It feels great to win for them."john__alan_crop

Vochaska has become the dominate Late Model at Hartford, going on a fantastic June and July run which has saw him win 3 races in a row and not finish worse then 2nd since Mid-June, "We  have had a great July..  3rd win in a row and a 7 race string of good fortune."  Vochaska is the points leader for the Late Models at Hartford Motor Speedway and is also in the Top 10 at Kamp Motor Speedway.  "We aren't quite as good on the smaller tracks, its something we need to work on.  Plus, Kamp has some major competition there, guys like Frank Heckenast Jr.and Guy Volk.

The Late Models will be back in action next Friday Night at Hartford Motor Speedway presents the Blueberry Grand Prix with 5 great divisions of racing.

NOTE : A freak accident during the Modified feature brought a hush to the facility as a yellow flag would bring the safety crew onto the track.   While one of the safety vehicles was entering the racing surface, the truck would catch the lip of the berm, fish tail and kind of hop back on to the track, in the process, throwing a track worker out of the back of the pick up.  He landed awkwardly and suffered a critical injury which required transportation to the local hospital where he is on life support and in very critical condition.

The balance of the evenings racing card was cancelled due to the severe nature of this accident and UMP Modifieds & UMP Factory Stock A Mains were postponed until next weekend, August 7th.
