There has been a lot of discussion in the off-season this year about Late Model Rules, the Late Model Alliance and 2010 Rule Changes.
Below is a video to demonstrate to race teams how the cars will be checked.
The Late Model Alliance, a group of 10 short tracks and 2 touring series that feature outlaw Super Late Model racing, met on a snowy and cold day January 7 at Charlie’s Pub and Grill in Jackson, MI. The business is owned by former Late Model car owner Charlie Woodruff.
The tracks represented were Michigan tracks Auto City, Berlin, Dixie, Flat Rock, Kalamazoo, Owosso and Spartan; Toledo from Ohio; and New Paris and Plymouth in Indiana. The Great Lakes Outlaw Late Model touring Series was also present, while the Main Event Racing Series was unable to attend, but has pledged its support of the group.
The Alliance, which began in 2003, was formed to create a set of body measurements for this type of Late Model race car. The goal has been successful in that the rules became a set of tape measurements, and not an interpretation of an individual.
For the first time in several seasons, the group met again in a show of unity and dedication to preserving and maintaining outlaw Super Late Model racing in the tri-state area. Several rules clarifications came out of this meeting, along with the start of looking at the 2011 season.
The items included the elimination of the 8” x 15” measurement on the nosepiece. The measurement that will remain is the 45 inches maximum from the center of the hub to the tip of the nose, including the lip/splitter. A maximum width of 4 inches for the lip was set. The nosepiece flares must be flush with the top of the fenders.
Other clarifications are as follows: the body is to be mounted in a conventional manner, with no recessed body panels. Wheel flares cannot extend past the sidewall and center of the tire. The rear spoiler and rear quarter panel cannot be closer than 3 inches to outside of right rear tire; the rear deck lid drop or “belly” may have maximum of 1 inch drop, checked with a straight edge from side to side of rear quarter panels.
For the 2011 season, the group agreed that NO titanium or carbon fiber rotors or driveshafts will be permitted. Several tracks already have one or both of these items in their rules.
“These track owners, promoters and touring series have pledged their support of the Alliance and the outlaw Super Late Model class,” noted Scott Schultz, spokesman for the group. “The meeting shows the commitment by this group more so than ever before to make things easier for a race team to go from track to track in terms of the body measurements, which is the goal of the Late Model Alliance.”
