Kalamazoo Speedway played host to the Michigan Circle Track Sim-Racing League on Thursday for an excellent seventy lap Outlaw late model race. Twelve drivers were on the grid at the fast little .375 mile track and the event marked a couple of firsts the league. This was the first time in the series that all the starters were still running when the checkered fell and it was the first official event run in “hardcore” mode, meaning that all driving aids, or arcade-game like setting were turned off. “This is a big step for the league,” said lead administrator Craig Bristol, “The intent from the beginning was for this to be a “hardcore” series. Everyone has the exact same set up and it is strictly driver against driver, without any extra help from the Sim. This is as close to real racing as you can get without actually being on the track on a Friday or Saturday night.”
John Hernly, driving the No.64 TV land Chevrolet, driving from his home in Lansing secured another pole with a time of 13.628 seconds, (99.061 mph). Midland, Michigan's Don Colbath in the No.1 started on the outside with a qualifying lap of 13.676 seconds, (98.713 mph). Hernly led the grid to the green, which was quickly followed by a yellow, when Phil Loedeman from Kalamazoo, got into the back of Midland, Michigan's Doug TerMeer in the No.91. ![]()
After resetting the field, the yellow flew again at lap 15 when Doug's brother, Tom TerMeer in the No.89 had a self spin coming out of turn four. From the practice sessions, it was clear that tire management was a key factor, so even with just a few laps into the race, several drivers elected to pit for fresh rubber. Loedeman in the No.0 was the first, taking right-sides only, as did New York driver Sean Case in the No.77. Craig Bristol, both of the TerMeer Brothers and new MCT-SRL driver Josh Walker from Ringgold, Georgia in the No.83 all opted for a full set of tires. Loedeman and Walker however both got hit with speeding penalties and had to restart at the rear of the field.![]()
The caution flag waved for the third and final time on lap 38 when Case in the No.77 racing to stay on the lead lap, got into the back of Doug TerMeer, sending the No.91 into the wall after spinning. The only drivers who did not pit for tires this cycle were Hernly in the No.64, Colbath in the No.1 and myself in the No.73, who were running first, second and third respectively. Following the restart, Hernly maintained the lead with Colbath nipping at his heals until they encountered slower traffic on lap 52. Hernly closed the gap a bit quicker than he was anticipating and had to swerve to keep from
knocking the lapped car into the next county. The evasive maneuver resulted in Hernly slapping the wall on the entry to turn one. Colbath dove to the inside and took the position. Seeing the Colbath/Hernly battle going on in front of me I made the mistake of trying to close ground on them, and driving too hard, pretty much smoked my right front tire.
Hernly was able to get back by Colbath on lap 59 an retained that through the checkered flag. Colbath finished
second and Fuerstenberger finished third. The resulting push from my overheated front tire caused me to smack the wall and I dropped from third to eighth, running the lasts two laps on a flat tire.
