MCT-SRL Nashville Race Recap, July 2, 2009

The latest MCT-SRL race turned into a fuel mileage contest when the 150 lap race at the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway ran from green to checkered flag, caution free. Series points leader John Hernly secured his third pole of the season with a time of 19.175 (110.769 mph) at the .596 mile track. David Herrin qualified in the second spot with a 19.302 second (110.041 mph) lap.

From the start it was the Hernly-Herrin show out front, as the two drivers separated themselves from the rest of the field by a large margin. Hernly led the first 9 laps before Herrin got a good run coming out of turn two and was inside Hernly’s No.64 entering turn three. Herrin completed the pass and took the top spot on lap 10, but Hernly was back out in front on lap 18. After the two drivers swapped the lead a few more times, Herrin made an unscheduled pit stop on lap 60 taking on four tires and fuel, but was cited for speeding in the pits. Already two laps down and not racing for points, Herrin completed one additional lap, then retired from the event, rather than serving the penalty.

It looked as if John Hernly had another win all but in the bag, but on lap 92 Hernly’s computer overheated, disconnecting him from the server. With that, his night was over. Hernly’s mishap handed the lead over to Phil Loedeman, who had to make a scheduled green-flag pit stop three laps later. At that point Brad Mahar in the No. 7, who had already pitted, took control of the field.

Brad Mahar crosses the finish line on fumes.

As the race remained under green and the laps clicked off it became a tense one for the leader. Mahar had problems refueling during his pit stop and appeared to be a lap or two short of making it to the checkered flag. Luckily for him, he had a large enough lead over second place Craig Bristol, that Mahar was able to manage his fuel mileage and go on to win.

“I just lucked out tonight” said Mahar following the race.

“My fuel pressure was down to almost nothing when I crossed the line.”
