Brothers Andrew and Ryan Shelton of Millington take brotherly love and competitiveness to a whole new level at home and at Auto City Speedway.
Ryan is the oldest and started out two seasons ago in the Hornets Division.
“I have always loved NASCAR and always wanted to race,” Ryan said. “When our friend Rob Roney from Holly Auto Parts told my Dad and I about the Hornets Division we jumped right in. The Hornets Division is very affordable. If you can do most of the work yourself, you can build a racecar for about a thousand dollars. We run stock motors and everything. The biggest expense is the roll cage.”
The Shelton team has built two Hornet Division racecars and the Pure Stock that Ryan is running this year.
“The Pure Stocks have a little more speed and more car to handle,” Ryan said. “I’m looking forward to the new division this year.”
“I get his hand me down cars,” younger brother Andrew laughed. “After his (Ryan’s) first year, we built a second car for him and I started in the original model from the year before. I spent last season learning the car and the track, but I had a good start this year.”
The team was just finishing Andrew’s car on race day for his first night out.
“He didn’t even get to practice,” Ryan said. “But he finished second in his heat and third in the feature. I’ve won heats before, but never a feature. We just race for fun, but it would be nice to get a feature win this year, for both of us.”
These two brothers love working together on the cars and helping each other become better competitors in their individual divisions, but off the track they are very competitive with each other, even when they watch NASCAR.
“My favorite driver is Jeff Gordon,” Ryan said. “So Andrew has to like Dale Earnhardt, Jr. We just enjoy competition and having fun.”
