Modifieds driver Travis Eddy No. 88 won the heat race on the historic Dixie Motor Speedway 1/3 mile track in Round I of the Modifieds Short Track Series. Eddy also won the Schaefer and Bierlein Dodge of Frankenmuth hard Charger award when he worked his way through all the traffic from the number seven spot and won the feature event.
The No. 88 is a new number for Eddy, and Track Announcer Matt Prieur asked Eddy about it after his win.
“My dad (legendary seven-time ASA National Tour Champion Mike Eddy) always drove the No. 88 here,” Travis said. “So it seemed right for me to drive it here, too.”
The 25-lap Sportsman feature went to Chris Stearns No. M15. Stearns held off hard charges from Chet Allen and Kevin Harder all the way to the wire. Allen made a last minute move to get around Stearns in the final lap, but spun and gave the number two spot to Harder. Don Riley was third, Jimmy Novak fourth and Chet Allen recovered in time to round out the top five.
The cars were fast last Friday, but dating at Dixie was even faster.
The Parish’s put together a night of Speed Dating sessions in the VIP SkyDeck with free hors d’oeurves, Koegel Hot Dogs and Coke products for all participants.
Special guests, the Mid Michigan Derby Girls gave a demonstration during the intermission, and the single Derby Girls participated in the Speed Dating Sessions.
Unfortunately, the race night was a little faster than usual, too. Rains came in just before the start of the Street Stock feature and the night was cut short.
The Street Stocks will run a double feature next week to make up, along with the first appearance of the Great Lakes Super Cup Series, Round I of the Sport Stock Local Series (four and six-cylinder Front Wheel Drive machines), the Pro Late Models, Modifieds and Sportsmen.
The Bombers and Figure 8 features have been rescheduled for two weeks out on the 29th of May.
Next week at Dixie is Kids Bike Night and Civil Servant Night. Police Officers, E.M.T.’s and Firefighters get in free if they are wearing their uniform or show an I.D.
Correction: In the April 14, 2009 Edition, The MARC Times and Michigan Racing Scene reported Nick Clemens’ mentor to be Sam Fowler. The mentor was Local Legend Sam Faur.
