Jason started in Street Stocks in 1989 and says that his favorite part of racing is close competition.
“I enjoy competing with guys like Ed Newman, Jr. last year’s Champ, Chris Stearns and Curtis Hayden,” Jason said. “They’re all good drivers. Ed is fair with everyone on the track and always brings a good car every week. The fans get a great show when all the drivers are out there trying to compete with Ed.”
Hitsman sees the economy and gas prices as major challenges for short track drivers.
“With gas prices the way they are, guys have to stay closer to home,” Hitsman said. “That means a lot less traveling than we used to do and I think the biggest challenge for drivers right now is keeping sponsors on the vehicles. Businesses are afraid to sponsor cars because of the economy and drivers can’t keep their cars running without them.”
Mike Young Buick, Pontiac and GMC of Frankenmuth is Jason’s primary sponsor.
“I couldn’t do it without Mike’s help,” Jason said. “I put a lot of my own money into it and all of my time. My family helps, too. Especially my dad, Jim, and my brothers, Mike and Jeff.”
Jason is a family man. His wife Melinda and children Kayla and Cole are huge supporters of his racing.
“Both the kids want to race,” Jason said. “I’m thinking about starting them in Go-Karts in a few years and taking some time off from racing to be the Crew Chief. Racing is fun. You feel like a little kid on Christmas morning when you get to lead. I want my kids to experience that kind of thrill.”
Hitsman was only able to run part-time last year, but he’s planning a full season of racing this summer.
“Last year was the best in my career,” Jason said. “I had two feature wins and finished fourth in points. This year I’ll be racing full time and hope to better my points finish, but I would love a Championship since I’ve been doing this for forever and a day!” he laughed.
Hitsman is off to a good start for his 2009 goals with a feature win on opening night, a top five finish and a top ten finish in the first three events this year.
