The 2009 season is almost here at Kinross Speedpark. Sault Area Racing Association (S.A.R.A.) president and promoter Gerry Liscumb and crew are hard at work gearing up to bring the fans and drivers a top notch show this year. The season starts off with the annual car show at the Station Mall car show on May 9-10th and really gets into full swing on Friday night May 22. The track will feature the same classes as last year, and will have the ever popular open wheel modified division on a bi-weekly basis. Kinross Speedpark and Onaway Speedworld will share the modifieds as they will be at each track on alternating weeks.

"Colleen (Caron, promoter at Onaway Speedworld) and the team here at Kinross are hard at work with the newly formed Northern Michigan Racing Alliance." said Liscumb.  Both tracks are trying to keep a set of rules that are close enough to each other to give the drivers more chances to race equally on a weekly basis. The major differences will be the late model class. Kinross offers the "Super Lates" and Onaway will be offering the "Limited" class.

To understand the level of cooperation is to understand Liscumb.  "Gerry is one of the nicest guys that you could get to know." said racer Bill Cryderman.  He is there for the fans and is willing to do what ever it takes to make sure the show goes on.  It should be noted that although I am the beat writer for the MARC Times Racing News & Michigan Racing Scene in 2009, I spent a great deal of time at the track in 2008.  I can tell you first hand, I never heard a complaint about the young promoter.  I learned a lot from him

There are older and more experienced promoters in the state, but the drive and the support that he brings to the track shows he is evenly matched to any promoter in the area. Kinross plays host to a very family friendly environment, offering many events for youngsters durring its weekly events. There are a few planned special events that are still in the making, but Gerry will be giving us full updates as they become available.

The economic woes that have hit the state of Michigan have taken some hard hits especially in the area that the track is in, but the show will go on stronger than ever. Very little change in the gate prices from last year, and a better shot of alot of people staying close to home will make Kinross a perfect hangout on Friday nights. I think that we will have a great turnout for both cars and fans this season. If there were one sentence that we here at Kinross could say to get more people here, it would be that we are a fan friendly goal oriented track that will do anything to keep the show going for the loyal fans and new fans that we build upon. With out the fans and the drivers there is no track, and we are deeply greatful for all the support that we get week in and week out.

When it comes to special events, Kinross will have one new special this season. The Deon "Squeeky" Berlin Memorial on 4th of July weekend. For those of you who didn't know Squeek, he was one of the longest supporters of the track and passed away about 2 weeks before the end of last season. I had a chance to meet him when I worked at the track last season before he passed away. He was a really great guy, always helping out with the radios and bringing his 4-wheeler to help out at the track. His soul will live on with us as the seasons go on, and we plan on making this event a great show in his honor. Other Special events include the Anne Wilson Memorial and Randy Saddison Memorial for the modifieds, and the season finale Randy Dewitt Memorial.

Randy Dewitt was one of the founders of the track that tragically lost his life in a plane crash 7 years ago. Randys race has brought over 100 cars yearly to our facility each year, and we hope the numbers keep growing says promoter Gerry Liscumb. "Last years event saw drivers as far away a Minnesota come to our event.. I can't wait to see how we do this season."

Fans are reminded that they can keep up to date on everything that happens at Kinross here in the MARC Times Racing News & Michigan Racing Scene or on our track website at www.kinrossspeedpark.com . The website is kept up to date and offers a message board where fans and drivers can interact with each other durring the off weeks and season. So with that in mind, Kinross Speedpark says "see you on opening day and we hope that you enjoy your visit."
