It's Miller time at Mt. Pleasant Speedway

A strong field of nearly 70 cars were at the Mt. Pleasant Speedway for the annual "Modified Girls" Chuck's Discount Foods UMP Modified $750 special plus a full show of racing in the Miller Lite xtreme-logoLate Model, Smokers Club Street Stock, NAPA Modified Mini Stock, and Mt. Pleasant and Clare Automotive Stock Mini classes.

The night also paid tribute to the local police and firemen who help keep everyone safe.

For the second straight week, a strong field of UMP Modified cars appeared, with this week bringing in 25 of the state's best open-wheeled cars.

In Miller Lite Late Model action the first heat race saw Joe Pomeroy No. 24 of Cass City grab his first Mt. Pleasant win of the season. The final Late Model heat race saw Zack Olger No. 0X of St. John's get the win by holding off strong charges from Sam Epling No. 28 of Perry and Justin Robinson No. X1 of Shepherd.

Lining up next for their heat races were the Chuck's Discount Foods UMP Modifieds. The evening would call for three heat races and a semi-feature before the feature event.

In the first UMP Modified heat race, Lawrence Sprague Jr. No. 81 of Mt. Pleasant would turn his 2009 luck around by getting a victory, while Ken Smith No. S57 of St. John's, and Chuck Powell No. 95 of Harrison would also get heat race wins.

A two-car accident in the UMP Modified semi-feature would send Chris Wiggins No. 711 and Andy Galgoci No. 13, both of Mt. Pleasant, home early. The semi-feature win would go to Davey Hartman No. 12 of Howard City who was making his 2009 Mt. Pleasant Speedway debut. Others qualifying for the $750 to win UMP Modified feature through the transfer race were Craig Vance No. 42 of Midland, Rich Robinson Sr. No. 79 of Shepherd, Jay McClain No. 15M of Mt. Pleasant, and Pat Ehlert No. 20 of Ovid.

The Smokers Club Street Stock class would run two heat races on the night as Josh Loomis No. 11 of Weidman held off Mike Sparks No. 91 of Otterlake to get the win in the first heat race. In the final heat race for the Street Stocks, David Mielke No. 87 of Gladwin continued his strong rookie campaign in the class by getting his seventh overall win of the year by beating Rob Brillhart No. 77B to the finish line.

The NAPA Modified Mini Stock field continues to get bigger and this week Jeff Fowler No. 29 of Saginaw added to his solid 2009 racing season with a heat race victory over Joey Burch No. 16 of Rosebush.

Although the total number of cars is down in the Mt. Pleasant and Clare Automotive Stock Mini class, the racing action is strong and after a one-week stint in the Modified Mini class, Mike Schnettler No. 88 of Sanford returned to the Stock class and picked up the heat race win.

Following all the heat races, it was now time for the main event features in all classes. Lining up first was the 30-Lap Miller Lite Late Model class. A 14-car field took the green flag, and early on the leader would be Olger, while he would get a hard charge from Epling, Eric Spangler No. 27 from Lake City and Robinson. On lap 15, Epling would swing his car to the high side and grab the lead from Olger. As the laps ticked away, Robinson would move his car to the low side and go side-by-side for a few laps with Epling as the two battled for the top spot. Eventually Robinson would put his X1 car in front and from there would pull away and grab his first Mt. Pleasant feature win of the season for the two-time defending track champion. Rounding out the top five in the Miller Lite Late Model feature were Olger, Spangler, Epling, and Pomeroy.

Up next with their 20-Lap feature was the Smokers Club Street Stock class. As has been the case all season the three cars of Mielke, Loomis and Sparks would continue to be the strongest cars. After 20-laps of racing, Mielke would get the feature win, his fourth main event win of the year at Mt. Pleasant. Loomis, Sparks, Greg Tragis No. 49 of Harrison, and Gary Buskirk No. 3 of Stanton would complete the top five.

A full field of 20 Chuck's Discount Foods UMP Modifieds would make the call for the Modified Girls $750 to win special. Early on the battle was between Kevin Miller No. 43 of Mt. Pleasant and Steven Hilliker No. 21 of Midland as the two battled side-by-side for the lead with Joe Fowler No. 19F of St. Charles making it a three-car battle. After a late race caution, Hilliker would get a bad re-start and drop from second to fifth place. From then on Miller would show his dominance and pull into victory lane with his first feature win of the 2009 season at Mt. Pleasant and go home with the $750. The remaining top five were Fowler, Ryan Ritchie No. 32X of Gladwin, Rich Robinson Jr. No. 15 of Mt. Pleasant, and Troy Marciniak No. 8 of Muskegon, while Hilliker would end up sixth.

Again the NAPA Modified Mini Stock 15-Lap feature would come down to a battle between Jeff Fowler and Derick Neitling No. 21 of St. Charles. With Neitling out front, Fowler could not get around his competitor and Neitling would get his third feature win of the year as Fowler came home second, followed by Trever Fedewa No. 68 of Mt. Pleasant, Mark Eastman No. 89 of Midland and Cindy Malcolm No. 25 of Harrison.

The last class to roll out for the night was the Mt. Pleasant and Clare Automotive Stock Mini 10-Lap feature race where Schnettler would return to victory lane over Shane Aescheliman No. 53 of Gladwin, Rob Nieman No. 28 of Alma, Bob Baltierrez No. 711 of Alma, and Steve Keeler No. 62 of Vestaburg.

Friday, June 12 at the Mt. Pleasant Speedway is Scout Night plus the Lil' Bud Shootout full show and an Auto Solutions Chuck's Discount Foods UMP Modified $750 special plus a Taco Boy $400 special in the Smokers Club Street Stocks. Racing begins at 7:45 p.m. at the Mt. Pleasant Speedway with the pit gates opening at 5 p.m.
