Hilliker brothers star at Mt. Pleasant Speedway

It was a night of double duty at the Mt. Pleasant Speedway on Friday, July 10 as four drivers were racing in two different classes during a full show of action which included an American Legion Post 110 of Mt. Pleasant sponsored Miller Lite UMP Late Model $1,200 special and a Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort sponsored Smokers Club Street Stock $300 special.

Driving double duty on the night were Rich Robinson Sr., who was piloting his No. 79 in the Late Model and Modified classes, along with Zack Olger, who was in the No. 0X in the Late Model and Modified divisions, Chris Wiggins, in the No. 76 Late Model and No. 711 Modified, and Joe Pomeroy, driving the No. 24 Late Model and No. 55 Street Stock.

Despite a threat of thunderstorms all day, Mother Nature kept the bad weather away and Mt. Pleasant got in its 10th consecutive night of racing in the 2009 season.

With $300 on the line, the Smokers Club Street Stocks came out first for their 20-lap feature as 14 cars started the race.

As has been the case all season, the top guns of David Mielke No. 87 and Josh Loomis No. 11 showed their muscle and this week added Pomeroy to the mix as the three pulled away from the field in a three-car breakaway.

Loomis grabbed the early lead, but would eventually be run down by Mielke, who would take the checkered flag and grab his 13th overall win and sixth feature victory of the season. Loomis came home second, followed by Pomeroy, Bryce Vanbuskirk No. 6 and Tom Hodges Jr. No. 32H to complete the top five.

The Mt. Pleasant and Clare Automotive Stock Mini feature was next in line as four cars took the green flag for an eight-lap feature. Current point leader Shane Aescheliman No. 53 looked to have another feature under his belt until Marc Times Racing News & Michigan Racing Scene's very own, Patrick McNamara, making his Mt. Pleasant Speedway debut, made a white flag bump and run to get the win. Coming in second place was Steve Keeler No. 62, with Aescheliman third and Bob Baltierrez No. 711 in fourth.

Because of the questionable victory, McNamara said later he would donate the feature winnings of $60 back into the pool for the July 31 Stock Mini $400 special and make it $100 for second place.

"I want to come back and try and win it back cleanly," McNamara said.

It was a 30-lap Miller Lite UMP Late Model feature for $1,200 to win courtesy of the American Legion Post 110 of Mt. Pleasant. Hall of Famer Roger Wing No. 55W and David Hilliker No. 21 made up the front row with Hilliker jumping to an early four car length lead on the field. A lap 11 restart would find Hilliker and Eric Spangler No. 27 side by side for the top spot and Zack Olgre No. 0X adding to the mix to make it a three-car battle. Spangler used the low side, Olger on the high side and Hilliker in the middle, but in the end the Midland-native Hilliker would prove to be too much en route to his first feature victory of the 2009 season at the Mt. Pleasant Speedway over Spangler and Olger, Rusty Seaver No. 18S in fourth and Ryan Vanderveen No. 23V fifth.

The NAPA Modified Mini Stock class was next as two-time defending champion Steve Detwiler No. 0D worked his way through the field to get his first feature win of the season as he held off a late race charge from Derick Neitling No. 21 and Jeff Fowler No. 29,  with Mike Schnettler No. 88 in fourth and Mark Eastman No. 89 fifth.

The final race of the night was the Chuck's Discount Foods UMP Modified 20-lap feature.

When the green flag flew, Modified rookie Andrew Galgoci No. 13 jumped out front and lead about the first 15 laps, his first ever out front in a Modified. Galgoci had the car too beat and looked like he may get his first career Modified feature win. As the race wound down, Galgoci would get a charge from Steven Hilliker No. 21. As Hilliker pulled even with Galgoci, the rookie would pull to a slight lead and the rookie and veteran would go back and forth for the lead. As the race came to a conclusion, it appeared Galgoci had burned some of his tires and he slipped back to third as the checkered flag flew and Hilliker grabbed the win. Coming in second was Lawrence Sprague Jr. No. 81, in his best showing of the season, Galgoci, who ran his best race yet in third, Ken Smith No. S57 fourth and another Modified rookie, Cody Bauer No. 19 rounded out the top five.

This Friday, July 17 is a Crate Late Model Special as the I-96 Speedway cars come to the Mt. Pleasant Speedway led by Hall of Famers Roger Wing, Kris Patterson, Rick Stout and 1999 Mt. Pleasant Speedway champion Jeff Kohn.  There will also be Chuck's Discount Foods UMP Modifieds, Smokers Club Street Stocks, NAPA Modified Mini Stocks, and Mt. Pleasant and Clare Automotive Stock Minis on tap at Mt. Pleasant on July 17. Racing action begins at 7:45 p.m.
