With a beautiful summer day after a week straight of rain and cold weather, Onaway was back in action with their 4th of July "Grand Opening". The day's activities started with the local parade in down town Onaway, where the staff and owners of the Speedworld handed out nearly 700 free passes for the racing activities scheduled later in the day. It proved to be a great idea, as the stands had plenty of people to greet the 45 drivers on hand for the 7 division show. The event was scheduled for a line up of the super late models, factory stocks, pure stocks, 4 cylinders and the NAMRA Formula Indy cars, but the modifieds voiced a very loud cry to promotor Colleen Caron and they were added to the show. Also during the nights intermission, there was a snowmobile burn out and an autograph session for fans to get a close up on the Indy cars.![]()

The Indy cars, powered by snow mobile engines, are capable of times near the super late models or sprint cars, as Paul Bossler would turn a 13.028 lap time durring qualifying which is nearly 105 miles per hour on the 1/4 mile oval. They had expressed to the owners of Onaway and the staff at the Kinross Speedpark that they were wanting to plan some more dates at both facilities this season, so things could be in the making for another stellar show by these little rockets!
The dashes had a ton of action in them, as cars were going side by side, or 3 and 4 wide at times in each race. The modified class saw a photo finish where George Wilson would take the win over Keith King by a mere inches at the line. The pure stocks would see Kris Riley take the lead and win at the line also by just under a 1/2 car legnth over Dave Morrell.
Dash Results:

Next up were the Australian persuit races. The NAMRA cars would see a commanding lead by the 45 car of Dan Frye Jr. He would run away from the pack and take his respected win. The factory stocks would see Casey Schimmel in the 72 car come from the back and take the lead from Terry Bisson taking the win. Bomber action would see some rubbing and some close calls as the number 70 of Chris Cole would start on the pole. Chris would quickly lose power handing the lead to Rich Sangster with in the first lap.
Australian Persuit race:
NAMRA: 45 Dan Frye Jr., 44 Andrew Challenger, 0 Paul Bossler, 9 Bart Stern, 16 Greg Stanley.

Bombers: 66 Rich Sangster, 91 Ken Werner, 36 Billy Clement, 55 Bub Docherty, 47 Frank Pelkey, 93 Steve Docherty, 70 Chris Cole.
Heat race action was really nice. Josh Ware would take a nice lead from Ed Sorget. Sorget was running very strong until he had a little bobble in 1 and 2. Zenker would spin in turns 3 and 4. Zenker who has not had the best of luck at Onaway, was back with a back up car to his orange and red 96, sporting a black and white car this week. The pure stocks would Dave Morrel lose the lead to Kris Riley when he had a near spin on the front stretch. The NAMRA cars would have some pretty scary moments, as Bart Stern and Dan Frye Jr. would get together on the front stretch. Frye would spin into the infield and would continue on alon
g with Stern. Greg Stanley would pull in after a mechanical problem. The modified heat would see a battle for the second and third spots as Tyler Parsons and Jame Brown would duke it out to the checkered flag.
Brown would nip Parsons at the line to take home the runner up spot to race winner George Wilson. The bomber class would see a red flag in their event. Chris Cole would get turned sideways in the 3rd turn right in the middle of the racing lane when he had contact with Frank Pelkey. Pelkey would tag the wall and continue on in the event. Cole would be sidelined to the infield to watch the remainder of the heat.

Feature time! The late models would go the full distance of 25 laps caution free with Josh Ware picking up his 5th win of the season. Modifieds would have one caution for Keith King who looped his mount on the front stretch. NAMRA would see 2 cautions as the 16 car of Stanley would die exiting the track in turn 1. Also another yellow for the 44 of Challenger who would spin on his own in turn 4. The factory stocks would start
the race and run the first 10 laps like they just left the starting line...Miller would lead the first 10 laps but would slide back to the 3rd position after a hard impact in the 19 ride of Terry Bisson. Bisson and the 30 car of Zimmerman would make contact and Bisson would hit the wall hard in turn 3. All drivers were okay from the incident, but Bisson would retire from the event along with Zimmerman. The 4 cylinder class would see a late race misfortune for Tom Gray. He would spin his mount on the back stretch while leading. Zack Knight would hold on to take the win in the number 18 Pinto. This would be his first carreer win for the y
