Illiana Motor Speedway 2009 Banquet and Awards Night
Schererville, Ind.—with a capacity crowd in attendance, Illiana Motor Speedway, an ASA Member track honored its Five Division Champions and weekly competitors at its annual banquet and awards night here at the Halls of St. George on Saturday evening, November 7.
Jeff Cannon (Late Model), John Nutley (Limited Late Model), Bill Serviss (Turbo Stox), Alex Arelano (Legends) and Tim Cronin (Pure Stock) were champions in their respective divisions for the 2009 season, which marked Illiana’s 62nd year of stock car competition.
Cannon, driving the Wayne Govert owned Port City chassis, Wegner powered Chevy Impala SS claimed his Second championship in his fourth full season of Late Model action, bested former track champion John Nutley and Rookie of the Year Anthony “The Boss” Danta in the final standings. Nultey defeated Johnny Senerchia in a battle for season honors in the Schepel Performance Limited Late Model division. Nutley was awarded a “NEW” GM crate engine for his accomplishments by Schepel GMC. Phil Splant finished third with Mark Ross Jr. being named the class’ rookie of the year.
Bill Serviss kept his “odd” year championship runs alive (2005, 2007, and 2009) in the Turbo Stock ranks, beating Billy Jerrells and Rookie of the year Bob Rohweder in the point’s battle. Alex Arelano conquered the newly formed Legends division over Chris King and Scott Pool. Tim Cronin was the Pure Stock track champion. The four-cylinder division saw Helen Nester and George Werner finish second and third respectively.
Mike Mikuly, owner of Illiana Motor Speedway thanked ALL of the sponsors and track employees for all their help this past season. Several special awards were given out during the evening’s presentations. Tom VanProoyan was awarded the Harry Molenaar Award of Excellence, which is named in honor of the speedway’s founder. Late Model Competitor Don Sabatino was honored with the Ray Nichels Sportsmanship Award. Over $10,000 worth of contingency products were awarded thanks to Impact Race Products, Five Star Bodies, Power Train Technology, Mechenix Wear, Lefthander Chassis, Howe, Tech-One Race Cars, MSD, PowerSource Racing engines, Oval Engineering, B&B Race engines, McGunnigill, VanSenus Auto Parts, Suspension Spring and Hoosier tire.
