The big car demo pitted 21 of the finest demo drivers in the area against each other in what is typically one of the wildest demolition derbies conducted in the tri-state. Billy Johnson of Uniontown, KY, hammered his way to victory. Johnson kept the car of Bart Webber in check and prevented him from escaping an entanglement of used-up cars. The three minute clock ran out and Webber would finish second. Hard hitting David Alford was third. Alford’s car began to stall. After two successful restarts and an immediate return to the action, the engine just would not crank another time.
The mini car demo ended in a dual between Jay Morris and Frank Lefler. Morris, who is from Chandler, IN, was declared the winner just as a fire erupted under the hood of his car. Morris had gained the advantage after Lefler’s car came to a stop. Lefler’s final effort was conducted with the rubber missing under the driver’s side of his car. Still he plowed his way to second spot on the rims. Ever present Hank Paulson was third in the Sponge Bob entry. Fifteen cars took the countdown for the start.
The full size cars competed in two 40 lap enduro races. There was a lot of slipping and sliding but no major wrecks. Each enduro had one red flag. The first enduro was stopped to allow the removal of a wheel and axel from turn one. The second enduro was stopped when a loose tire rolled onto the front straightaway.
Mike Moore of Elberfeld, IN, won the first enduro race. The race had 3 different leaders. Karl Jones and Pat Kaelin were second and third at the finish. Fifty-two cars started the first big car enduro but only seventeen would finish. Flat tires sent a lot of drivers to the infield.
The second big car enduro was won by Stan Miller of Haubstadt, IN. Miller started in the front row and was soon lapping the field. Ryan Hasenour of Celestine, IN, was second and Josh Hoefling of Ft. Branch, IN, was third. Fourteen of the thirty cars starting were still running at the finish. Karl Jones was fourth. Jones was the only driver to finish in the money in both enduros. Drivers could compete in both endures if they switched to a different car.
The Mini Enduro was won by Aaron Scarborough of Evansville, IN. He drove away from the large field. Don Calloway, Curtis Fulkerson, and Dan Yancey Jr. followed him to the finish line. Billy Smith won the mini car reverse race. Larry Lefler and Robby Derrington II were the next two drivers to back across the finish line.
The big cars also competed in a reverse race. Chad Zehr and Ricky Collins turned in some very quick laps to capture the event. Allan Bredemeier was third in that 4 lap dash.
The chain race was contested between 5 teams. Rick Collins and Chad Zehr teamed up to win it. Allan Bredemeier and Bart Webber ran second. All the teams finished but they ran a wide groove and used up a lot of race track.
