One of the Young Guns currently competing this season at the M40 Speedway, is 14 year old Tyler Hufford. Hufford drives his No.5 ride n the Pure Stock division every Friday night, and every Saturday night at the Kalamazoo Speedway.
Hufford's racing career started at age five in go-cart racing. After competing for championships, Hufford brought home titles in '02, '03, '05, and '06. The young driver decided it was time to move on to something bigger, thus ending up in a Pure Stock two years ago. It was not an easy switch for Tyler, as he fought hard to become competitive. It seemed like n up hill battle at times, Tyler recalls, " It was 2008, I got collected into an accident, it sent the car into the wall, bending the rear frame ".
The 2009 season seems to be starting off OK for the young driver, as Hufford has already made his way to the winner circle. " It was my first win in the Pure Stock ", said a very happy Hufford.
Hufford drives with the No.5 as it was a number his father ( Dale ) used when he would run in the enduros. No strangers to racing, the younger Hufford has family ties to racing that go further than his father, as his uncle and cousin also race ( Andy Bozell, Phil Bozell ). " I got into racing by hanging out at the track with my uncle. Learning how to race, being around them and working on them ", said Hufford.
Hufford is a big fan of hs families racing, and also likes to watch Mark Martin race in the Nascar Sprint Cup Series.
Outside of the track, Tyler is currently attending Schoolcraft Middle School. He enjoys playing baseball, football, and also likes wrestling. Although each sport has his attention, racing is his favorite.
Hufford plans on running in the Pure Stock division for a few more years, before moving up to the Modified division. Right now, he is enjoying the action and the adrenaline rush he gets from the Pure Stocks, he also is just enjoying the track ( M40 ). " I like the different lines you can run, the close competition ", said Hufford.
Hufford says his dad and mom are his biggest help, as well as his uncle ( Andy ), and cousins ( Andy Jr., Phil ). " My dad, uncle, and cousin have all stepped up and helped me through my career ", said Hufford.
This Young Gun shows no signs of slowing down, but shares that he will hang up the fire suit when he gets to old and the fun is gone.
Come out an see Tyler Hufford as he tries to become one of the elite forces in the Pure Stock division. You can catch Tyler at M40 Speedway every Friday night, or the Kalmazoo Speedway every Saturday night. Come see the next generation of racing.
