The fans at Kalamazoo were still coming through the gate as the night of destruction was about to begin. Those who came early were able to take bus rides around the racetrack and get an idea of what the drivers see on a weekly basis.
First in the line up was the spectator drags. After a few good shootouts and close calls the winner drove his black 2002 Pontiac Firebird to victory. Winner, Mike Parsons said, “I work on cars, and build street rods. Done a lot of work on it. I run at Martin sometimes and yeah this is my daily driver.” The win didn’t come without a price as a rivet found a way into his right front tire. When asked how much that would cost him, “More then I made.” The winner took home $300.
Two monster trucks were in attendance giving a good show to the crowd as they jumped and crushed cars, popped wheelies, and more. This is not the only night that the trucks will be in attendance at Kalamazoo as eight trucks are scheduled to make the “Monster Truck Mania” on July 25.
After the first trailer race the track was a disaster zone. A boat found the front stretch fence and video camera. Trucks, trailers, and boats were scattered at every point around the track, some in better shape than others. The feature bus race only had four buses that were able to compete and with two remaining competitive at the end proved to be a good showing for the fans.
The night also included the first ever outhouse search and destroy race. There was some suspicion after the race of whether or not the liquid on the track was from the cars of the outhouses. The skid car race, where the FWD 4cylinder cars run without tires on the rear rims, was the beginning of the fire works as sparks flew from the rims of the cars. One car, to no surprise, had to be extinguished after a fire started under it. The night finally came to a close with a good showing of fireworks.
Kalamazoo has a great line schedule for the rest of June that fans will not want to miss out on. June 20th brings the USAC National Sprint Car Series where cars backed by Sprint Cup driver like Toney Stewart and Kasey Kane will be racing. In addition to USAC will be the Late Model and Modified series. On June 27th the regular show will be racing “Double Trouble”. Fans will get twice the amount of feature races in one night, as a 5-in-1 show will have 10 feature
