USAC & Double Features

Saturday nights racing was non-stop action from the time practice and qualifying took place. The night was originally planned to include one modified, late model, and USAC feature. Since rain shortened the racing on June 6 the track officials decided to run a make up day and added an additional feature to the schedule.

The first feature of the night was a 30 lap modified race. The race was overrun with cautions and kept the track crew extremely busy. In the end it was Michelle Sexton No. 7 with the win over Jeff Ganus No. 5. Michelle was glad to be out of the car, “It was a rough race, I think the heat had a lot to do with it. We had a lot of cautions but we started on the outside pole and just kept a good race car, kept my mind on it, and came out and finished it.” With her first feature win she was feeling good about starting eighth in the second feature.

The second feature was faster paced because of fewer cautions. The winner of the second feature was Mike “Bubba” Brooks No. 84 who said, “Everybody went to the bottom and nobody wanted to go up top so I went up to the top. We tightened it up a little bit and they were the right changes to make.” After starting 13th and finishing 6th in the first feature Mike was happy to walk away with a good points night.

The first Late Model feature was similar to the first modified feature because of the cautions. The biggest battle was up front and after the leaders created their own accident it became Rick Senneker’s race to win. This win was special for many because this is Rick’s first ever feature win. Rick was all smiles and said, “This means a lot, I’ve been running one of these cars for about five years now. It’s been a long dry spell. Normally I’ve been chased with bad luck and it finally went my way.”

The second Late Model feature was just as exciting as the first. There was major contact at the front once again. Tom Thomas No. 82 was flying through the field chasing down race leader Rick Sexton No. 9. Thomas took the high side out of four and was pinched between Sexton and the front stretch wall. Terry Senneker kept his car clean throughout the race and after a late race caution, was able to take home the win. Terry said, “The car started off real loose and these tires kept getting hot making it looser. Luckily we had a caution to help cool them down. Just weaving through traffic and keeping the fenders on it, being conservative but aggressive when we needed it. On a long run we might have been in trouble.”

The big USAC Sprint Car Series feature was unlike the rest of the night. A forty-lap feature went caution free as Jerry Coons Jr. No. 96 looked like a man on a mission. The battle ended in lapped traffic and Bobby Santos No. 98 finished where he started. Bobby said, “It was very close, we got a little tight at the end and Jerry had a better car than us. We just had a good car and got it to the finish.” Also racing was the team owned by NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Tony Stewart, and the long time veteran, a champion of champions Jeff Bloom No. 26.

Kalamazoo’s last race in June is sure to be a must see for the fans. The double feature night will be host to all five series each running two features. The ten features will be tough on the drivers because an early problem could mean double the trouble in the point standings. Races start at 7:00 p.m. and for more information on Kalamazoos schedule visit www.kalamazoospeedway.com
