The weather was perfect for another night of racing action at the Galesburg Speedway. Each division was represented in force, with some record breaking once again going on in the Street Stocks.
Kevin England (No.1) would break the track record on his second lap of qualifying, setting the new record at a time of 15.863.
" First lap didn't like the way the car felt, but it was much better on the second lap. I didn't know I broke the record until I pulled in the pit, everyone was cheering and clapping ", said England.
England's new track record would stand for about one whole minute. Points leader Johnny Foote Jr. (No.11) went out and reclaimed his track record, not once, but twice on both laps ( 1st lap 15.862, 2nd lap 15.824 ).
" Track wasn't that good in hot laps, I was surprised to find out I broke it on both laps ", said Foote. " I just want to thank Ken Kirby, Richard Massey, R.J Russell, and my dad. These guys pulled the motor out of the car after the problems last week, and got it rebuilt and back in the car...You cant beat good friends like that ", Foote added.
The good times didn't end there, as Johnny Foote went on to win his third feature of the season over challenger Donnie Ritter(No.86). Kevin England would have his strongest run of the season finishing third place. Micheal Kerber (No.83) beat out Lance Gary (No.21) for the fourth place finish.
" Donnie's a hard driver, its always fun racing him cause we both want to win ", said Foote. " We're still having right front brake issues, the engine felt good off the corner. I felt him there, and just wanted to protect the bottom. There's a lot of good people helping me...I'm real fortunate ", added a very modest Foote.
Mike Kerber went to victory lane earlier in the night, winning heat one over Robert Kerber (No.70). Doug Wilhelm (No.3) would take heat two over Andrew Ritter(No.87R), however they would switch roles in the B feature, with Ritter winning his first ever feature win.
In the Mini-Stock division, Mike Govier (No.46), who has set fast time all season long, would finally break through to win his first race of the season, leading every lap of the dash to bring home the checker.
The heat race was Taylor made for a victory, as Rob Taylor (No.28) would pull out his first of the season over Ken Taylor (No.27). The story of the night in the Mini's, would be the return of Dustin Kline (No.14). Kline put on a dominating performance in the feature bringing home his first feature win, in his first trip back to the Burg in nearly three years. Govier would challenge, but came up short and settling for second place. Garry Janow II (No.50) would have another strong finish, in third. Fast qualifier, Jeremy Collins (No.5) could only salvage a fourth place finish, over point leader Rick Gale (No.0).
" The car was pushing near the end of the race, but the car loved the high groove. Its nice to be back racing again ", said a very excited Kline. He went on to say, "Felt good to get back in, kept the car handling good. Govier drove me clean, it was a good clean race ".
Kline went on to thank His grandfather (Wayne), wife (Jessica), Chet Terry, and Al's engines.
The Late Models had one of the biggest heart breakers of the night. Ottis Jennings (No.11) would make his way to the front of the field, and start to walk away with the race. Caution after caution, would keep the field running tight. Contender after contender would challenge for the lead, Jennings would hold off all advances. It wasn't til the last six laps, that the race was red flagged due to a fluid spill on the track. While waiting on the clean-up, Jennings right front wheel started to loose air, causing him to pit right before the green flag would drop, and ending any hope of getting that first ever Late Model feature win.
Donnie Ritter (No.86) would take over the lead on the restart and hold off last weeks feature winner Marty C. Crawford (No.X) for his first feature win of the season. Jenning's teammate, Todd Foote (No.10) would bring home third place, while fast qualifier, Scott Rugg (No.49), would hold off Luke Krick (No.9) for the fourth place spot.
" This was a moral booster, after blowing the motor a year ago just four weeks in ", said Ritter. Ritter went on to say, " It was a good feature, I didn't know if I could get around him ( Jennings ), but I sure was trying, rather have raced for it til the end ".
" I wanted to puke ", said a dejected Jennings. " The car was real good, I wasn't giving up the bottom. I figured they could take it to the outside, cause there's no bottom here ", added Jennings.
Donnie Ritter wanted to thank his sponsors (Caudill Recycling, Ritzee Hamburgs, Performance racing Engines, Ardco LLC, Millwright Services and Fabrication, and ASA Auto and Tire ) and crew ( Rusty, Scuba Steve, and Andrew ). " Without a good crew, we wouldn't be here ", said Ritter.
Chuck Greer (No.84) won the dash holding off Todd Foote, while Jake Hopwood took his second heat race checker of the season over Luke Krick.
There was a Jim Woodin (No.32) siting at the Burg Saturday night. One week after his absence, Woodinwould set fast time and pull out a huge victory in the Sportsman feature. With just five laps to go, Woodin caught and passed race leader Josh Trammell (No.82) for his third feature victory of the '09 season, and his 50th Sportsman victory, driving for Bob Garrett. Trammell would hold off Rick McMullen (No.9) for runner up, with Melissa Stemes (No.02) beating out hard charging rookie Chris Garrett (No.31), for fourth.
" The car was loose from the get go, the right front spring wasn't set, eight laps into the feature , it placed itself ", said Woodin. " There for a while, there was no place to go. I was worried about getting around Josh ( Trammell ) with just five to go ", added Woodin. Woodin wanted to thank crew and sponsors for their support.
Trammell was also runner up in the dash, as he could not get passed Adam Drobny (No.98). Drobny rolled to his second dash win of the season. Heat win went to Gary Mellinger (No.15).
Johnny Hyder (No.41) was on top of his game again this week in the Burg Stocks, Stealing two more victories. Hyder beat out Aaron Rheinsburg in both the heat and the feature to bring his win total to five wins in just the past four weeks.
" I'm just having fun...the cars strong. Aaron's a great racer, I wish I had raced that way at age sixteen ", said Hyder. He went on to say, " I like this division...its cheap, with the economy...its rough ".
This weekends schedule has a full 4-in-1 show with a banner contest. The Burg Stocks will not be running til Sunday. Speaking of Sunday, School Bus Figure 8 time! The first of two shows this season, with Modifieds running for $500 to win. The Burg Stocks will also run on Sunday.
