Independence Day Celebration with FIREWORKS! and events ranging from a Jet Car Melt Down, Monster Truck, Airway Lanes Burg Bowling, Home Depot Board Race, Gauntlet Race, Blues Brother Parking Contest, Automobile Red Rover and Much More! The 8th Annual Eve of Destruction at the Galesburg Speedway filled the parking lot as well as the stands. On a normal night most drivers want to keep from wrecking their rides, but Saturday night proved to be just the opposite. Most drivers took the night off, but a select few got to go out and have the time of their lives.
The night began with the National Anthem and the Monster Truck 'Nitemare ' doing the honor of taking the flag around.
The Mini-Stocks would be the only regular class racing this night as they took to the track for a make up feature.
Garry Janow II No. 50 put on a racing clinic in the make-up feature as he made his way to the front before the half way point of the race. Janow passed Mike Govier No. 46 who experienced a flat left tire causing him to exit from the race. Janow went unchallenged the rest of the way going on to win his first ever Mini-Stock A feature race. Jeremy Collins No. 5 would finish second while Ken Taylor No. 27, fresh off his first ever feature win the night before at M40 Speedway, finished third. Joe Gonzales No. 29 held on to fourth place ahead of Doug Vanderpol No. 60.
“What a big night the fourth of July. The truck was really good. I had adjusted the sway bar and it really helped out ", said a very happy Janow. “Am I going to hold on or is Mike (Govier) coming back. The first five laps I held back patiently then made my move. I'm starting to get more comfortable with the truck, learning from the veterans how to run a better line. I knew it was my turn in the winner circle ", added Janow.
Garry Janow thanked his dad Garry Sr., mom Shirley, wife Holley, his children Kacie, Drew, Chance, Taylor, and crew Eric Edwards and Eric Way. Garry also thanks his sponsor Auto Truck and Van Barn, as well as Holley’s parents Amanda and Eddie who made the trip from Jackson.
Jeremy Collins won the Mini Stock Australian pursuit.
Next up was the Home Depot board-racing competition and some drag racing. The Airway Lanes bowling competition and the automobile red rover racing as well as the Blues Brothers parking contest did some damage.
The next competition turned out to be a fan favorite as well as my own, as I was able to run in the first ever Galesburg Gauntlet Race. The race consists of four vans running the track for their lives while being chased by 16 cars determined to wreck you at any cost. This made for some extreme action and the fans enjoyed every minute of the race. Derek Lott stepped down from the flag stand to run one of the vans as well.
“I enjoyed every minute, that was some of the craziest fun, I have ever had ", said Lott.
“I was just aiming for the big white van, but every time I went to hit it, someone else was spinning him ", said Sportsman driver Adam Drobny who had driven one of the cars.
When the checkered flag waved, the carnage was spread throughout the track. The fans were on their feet and roaring for more.
The Monster Truck “NiteMare " then made his way to the track to flatten some used cars into the ground, followed by the Jet Car melt down.
The night ended with an awesome display of fireworks. If you weren’t there you missed a great show.
This week at Galesburg Speedway is the 7th Annual Freedom 100 for the Late Models. The Sportsman, Mini-Stocks, Street Stocks, and Burg Stocks will also appear.
July 18th is Mid-Season Championship night at the Burg for all divisions. See the point’s battle heat up.
July 25th is Powerball night, with a full 5-in-1 show.
Come see some of the best racing action Michigan has to offer every Saturday night at the Galesburg Speedway.
