Unseasonably cool weather didn't keep fans away from the Galesburg Speedway Saturday night. The fans packed the stands just one week removed from the Freedom 100 to see what would happen next. Mid-Season Championships were on tap for each division and the drivers would not disappoint.
The Late Model division had a tough task at hand as they had to follow up last weeks Freedom 100. They would pass with flying colors as the No.38 of Jesse VanAvery came alive and rocketed his way to the front. Once to the front, VanAvery never looked back racing hard to his first ever Late Model feature win, just one week after finishing runner up in the Freedom 100. Little brother, Adam VanAvery was not to far behind as he fought his way through the traffic to take home the second place finish, giving the VanAvery's their first one-two finish ever. Luke Krick held off Scott Rugg for third, while first time Late Model driver, Mark Horton, finished a respectable fifth.
" The car was good at the beginning. We were still on the freedom tires and it ended up real loose at the end of the race ", said a very excited Jesse VanAvery. " This was a really big win, I only wish it had come a week sooner. The car has a lot more in it, but were only half way through the season ", added VanAvery.
" Its about time, he deserves to win one. With him leading it, it was just like a win for me ", said Adam VanAvery. He went on to confirm, " Im getting one though, before he gets two ".
Talking to Brad 'Papa Bear 'VanAvery after the race, he said, " I was just thinking, don't try Adam ( passing big brother for the win ). I just didn't want something bad to happen. Our luck is changing and I am really proud of them. Jesse worked hard on both cars, both boys were at the shop working all week. These boys will be contenders for years to come ".
The VanAvery Team wanted to thank their mom Peggy, Roy Schellhorn, Sweet Manufacturing, Cyber 1 Programming, E&H Signs and Designs, and the Crazies in the stands, for all their support.
The Sportsman division also had a first time winner in their Mid-Season Championship feature. Rookie of the Year candidate Chris Garrett put on a racing clinic as he drove to the front and went on to win his first ever Sportsman feature. Points leader Matt Frazier finished a distant second place, while Adam Drobny took home third place for the second week in a row. Rick McMullen held off Josh Trammell for the fourth place finish.
" The car was pushing a bit, but it was really fast. We didn't get the qualifying time we wanted, but it still got us the trophy. This car is tough to pass and I was only going to let that happen on the outside ",said Garrett. Chris wanted to thank his crew, Mike's Tire and Auto, Butler Motor Speedway, Woodin Motorsports, and ASA Auto.
The Street Stock division would have two features on the night, as there was a make-up feature from the previous week. John Foote Jr. would go on to dominate both feature races, putting a strangle hold on the points lead while only at the half way point of the season. In the make-up feature, Foote beat out Bryan Noble for the top spot, with Donnie Ritter finishing third. In the Championship feature, Foote would take on his second feature win of the night ( 6th of the season ), beating out Stephen Casterline. Bran Noble finished fourth, behind Donnie Ritter, while Tollie Wichtman got the top five spot as well.
" The car was fast tonight, it went where I needed it to go. The car is at its best for the remainder of the season ", said John Foote Jr. " I'm at a level my dad ( John Sr. ) was at in his '89 season, and that's an accomplishment ", added Foote.
John wanted to thank all his crew and sponsors ( Bee Clean, Bone Appitet, Maple Hill Sprinkling, S&T Lawn Service, Munn's Party Store ) for their continued support.
The Mini-Stocks were on hand for double features as well. The results in both features had Jeremy Collins coming out victorious putting him back in the points race. Mike Govier would mirror himself in both features as well, coming home in second place, while Garry Janow II did the same for third place.
" I get to the front as fast as possible and do my best to hold off the competition. Tonight helped our chance of getting into the points race ", said Jeremy Collins, at nights end. Collins thanked Jim Talent, Shane Clark, Kevin Persons, Pro 1, NAPA Auto of Battle Creek and M66 Auto Glass.
The Burg Stocks had a first time winner as Dave Miller bested Aaron Rheinsburg for the win. Johnny Hyder drove his way to a third place finish, with Wally King Jr. beating out Dale McGhan for fourth.
July 25th is Powerball Night, with a full 5-in-1 show. August 1st is Kids Night at the Galesburg Speedway with another 5-in-1 show, and many different events for the kids. August 8th is the last Autograph Night of the season, with a 4-in-1 show, and no Burg Stocks. And August 9th, the show all the kids are waiting for, the School Bus Figure Eight. The Michigan Legends and the Burg Stocks will also be on hand. Don't miss the second half of the season as the points race in each division is getting geared up for a great finish to the '09 season.
