Saturday night Mid-Michigan Speedway honored our military and all veterans entered free. Recognition was made by staff, crews and fans to all past and present military in attendance.
The night of racing was kicked off with the mini-stocks participating in an Australian Pursuit. This is a race where the faster cars start at the rear, and in single file. As they race, if you are passed, you must pull off the track. This was a just for fun race, and No. 62 of "Yogi" Metz Sr. was the winner.
The Late Models took to the track first, and just as in the heat race Obrinske Jr. and Joey Shuryan ran side by side trading the lead what seemed like every couple laps. With ten to go, the yellow waved and the field bunched back up for a shoot out. The rookie Obrinske snatched the lead away from Shuryan and brought home the checkered flag for his first feature win. Announcer Sean Sprague recalled something Walt had said earlier, and when asked he replied " Uh ... I don't remember. Go fast and turn left." He went on thanking his dad and family for helping him with the car and supporting him and his racing. " Ya know I think of all the things I wanna say, but when I get in front of this mic ... I just wanna thank the fans, and without you guys we would not be racing and I really appreciate it." I asked him how his car felt, " It really was neutral, and when it is, I am happy." " I am on old tires tonight, four week old tires." Earlier in the heat race, it was a photo finish between Obrinske and Shuryan, with Shuryan getting the win. Commenting on that race, Walt said " That was one of the funnest races I have ran."
Second feature of the night were the Mini Stocks. These drivers always put forward some great action. The No. 86 of Art Kimball, yes he is as old as the number on the car, ran up front all night, and had finished second in the heat. No. 44 of rookie Doug Stevenson, has been improving each week, and will be seen in Victory Lane soon. "Yogi" Metz put his No. 62 in the fast qualifier position, but in the end it was "Wild thing" Darren Wright's No. 23 that came in first under the checker. Oh did I happen to mention it was also his first feature win. The only thing he could say was "WOW!" Darren is a member of Never Dead Racing, and wants to thank the Metz's for hooking his car up with an awesome set up. Darren ran in the Brian Heeney Memorial the night before and dedicated the win to Brian, "This ones for him".
The third feature to hit the track was a combined Sportsman and Modified race. The drivers spoke before hand and decided that with the car count that they could all race together. Chris Rice No.76 from Traverse City took the green, and man can this kid drive, but by lap 10 the mods of Wayne Haughton and Earl Miles had passed Rice and Oberst. Oberst had problems earlier in the night, and race officials delayed some racing to allow him, with assistance from other drivers in the pits, to repair his truck. On lap 13 Earl Miles passed Haughton for the lead after several laps of racing each other side by side. Earl maintained the lead and brought home his 4th win in a row. In Victory Lane Miles hopped out of his car and went straight to his left rear. When asked by Sprague what happened " Under the caution I thought what is wrong. I thought I had a flat tire. Apparently the lugs did not get tightened." There was a lot of space between the lugs and the rim, and the lug holes were seriously ovaled. " The last ten laps I did not think I was going to make it four in a row. It's been a great year, thank you fans for coming." After the race talking to Wayne Haughton he said jokingly " I think Earl should thank me. He wanted to run more laps in our feature, but we all decided on 35 laps. If we would have ran 40 or 45 I think he may have been in trouble."
It was another night of clean fast racing, and I cannot wait for the weekend so I can get back to Mid-Michigan Speedway for some clean, fast, fun racing action. Hey the hot dogs are pretty good also.
