With the radar showing a steadily approaching thunderstorm, the racing action kicked off promptly at seven o'clock with the hopes of getting the full show in before the rain started to fall.
Unfortunately, the full slate of racing wouldn't be completed before the wet stuff arrived, but the team at Thunderbird Raceway was able to get four of the six feature races in and Thunderbird will be having double features for the Sportsmen and Factory Stock divisions on July 4th as their feature races were washed away. That means there will be NINE feature races being run on Independence Day, as UMP Late Models make their return to Thunderbird Raceway with a $1000 to win event sponsored by Puhrman Excavating of Hartford. This is a rare treat for race fans, setting up what should be an action packed and exciting July 4th evening.
The UMP Warriors kicked off the racing action on Saturday Night with their unique Thunderbird Warrior start: Eight across with a standing start ! Jimmy Ellis No. 648 got a great hole shot off the drop of the green flag and took the early lead, while Randy Whitten in the No. 1R and Jerry Vogel in the No. 58 took the task of attempting to run him down. Debris on the track brought out the yellow flag on lap four and re bunched the field. Once again Ellis got off to a great start, but this time Whitten didn't let him get too far out front and on lap six made the pass to take over the lead. The No. 69 of Jim Perry would work his way up to the front of the field and the two Thunderbird Raceway Modified regulars would go door-to-door for several laps before a late caution would set up a two lap shootout. On the re-start Brian Carson in the No. 1040 took advantage of the three-wide re-start to shoot to the bottom and surprised both Perry and Whitten taking the lead and holding them off for the UMP Warrior Win.
The UMP Bombers were next on the lineup board, with Adam Graves in his No. 55 setting the pace for the twenty lap feature. Justin Schuler in the No. 44 would be the earlier leader, while Cody Whitten in the No. 77 and Bruce Norwick in the No. 412 worked their way through the field. Laps 5 through 12 would see several yellow flags and restarts as the Bomber regulars tussled over every position. Bruce Norwick Jr in the No. 5 would come out of the yellows with the lead, then become the cause of the final yellow himself. The Thunderbird flag man called for a green, white, checker finish and at the stripe it was Bruce Norwick Sr. in position to take the win.
Up next were the UMP 4 Cylinders, a division being dominated this year by CJ Rector in the No. 28 mini-stock truck. At the drop of the green flag, the No. 6 of Mark Faber would jump out to the lead, getting as far out as 10 car lengths, while Rector attempted to work his way through traffic. A yellow at lap 6 would regroup the field and set up a door-to-door battle between Farber and Rector. Farber would gradually find a bit of grip and pull out to a comfortable lead while Rector would loop his truck on the final turn giving 2nd and 3rd to Rice and Shennel respectively.
The UMP Modifieds would be the final feature run before the wet stuff arrived. The open wheelers were going 20 laps and early In the feature the No. 8 of Troy Marciniak was the early leader, stalked by No. 27 John McCaul and Darrell Woodring in the No. 03. By the half way point, McCaul would have the lead, with Woodring and No. 13 Derek Poland battled for 2nd as McCaul pulled out to a sizable lead. The yellow flew on lap 9, bunching the pack, but on the restart McCaul would easily pull away leaving the No. 03 & No. 13 to battle for second. Joining them at the front of the pack was Jeff Erickson in his No. 1E as the three cars battled hard over the final 6 laps. McCaul would have a 15 car length lead as the checkered flag flew.
Mother Nature arrived before the next feature could get underway and the balance of the evening was postponed till next weekend. We hope to see you at the track.
