The Spartan Speedway hosted the Stan Perry Memorial “Godfather 75” on Sunday, June 21st. Twenty-four Andrew’s Chevrolet Super Late Models timed in for their shot at winning the 75-lap feature in honor of the “Godfather of the Ohio Posse,” Stan Perry, who succumbed to a fatal heart attack at the track in 2007. Dale Lewis took the early lead when the green flag dropped, with Chad Finley in hot pursuit. Four laps in, Finley took the lead, while Dave Sensiba and Phil Bozell got around Lewis and battled for the second spot. Curt Spalding jumped into the mix, along with Walt Obrinske Jr. On lap 20, P. Bozell dove under Sensiba and went to work reeling in Finley. Dave Stehouwer began his march to the front, bringing Andy Bozell with him. Caution on lap 21 diminished Finley’s lead and P. Bozell went to work on him for the lead. Caution waved on lap 29 as Finley and P. Bozell got together, moving Sensiba into the top spot. On the restart, Sensiba and Spalding took off, while Stehouwer and A. Bozell ran nose to tail for third. Tim Ryan drove into contention behind Obrinske, as Jack Landis, Stan Perry’s son-in-law, set his sights on the top five. Spalding took the high road and made the pass on Sensiba for the lead on lap 35. Caution closed the field up behind Spalding, giving Sensiba another shot for the lead. Stehouwer was quick on the draw for the restart and took second away from Sensiba, while A. Bozell jumped to the outside of Sensiba for third and Landis dove under Obrinske for fifth. Stehouwer had his hands full trying to hold of A. Bozell, while the leader, Spalding, drove away from the field. A. Bozell dove under Stehouwer into second, on lap 52, and began reeling in Spalding. A. Bozell looked to the inside of Spalding on lap 59 and jumped to the outside for a second attempt on lap 62. A. Bozell got a run coming off turn two on lap 63, but Spalding slammed the door. Caution waved as Spalding spun, handing the lead over to A. Bozell. Bozell had company though as Stehouwer and Landis were zeroing in on the lead. Landis ducked under Stehouwer for second but ran out of laps for a shot at the leader. At the stripe, it was fast qualifier A. Bozell, Landis, Stehouwer, Sensiba and Ryan.

The Performance Automotive NW Sportsmans saw a new face set fast time for the division. Jimmy Scavarda set the bar for the other eleven competitors and on the start of their 40-lap feature, Corby Thomas, Jamie Feguer and Jim Miller Jr. had a great battle going, while Scavarda drove past the field on the outside to sit in second behind Miller on lap four. On the restart, after a caution for a spin, Scavarda once again jumped to the high side, running outside of Miller and the pair ran side by side until Scarvarda took the lead on lap six. Robbie Johnston was picking off cars right and left as he and Dane Long drove into second and third behind Scavarda. Johnston and Long duked it out as Scavarda drove away. Long was reeling in Johnston when Scavarda ducked into the infield ending his bid for the win on lap 30. Johnston and Long ran first nose to tail, then side by side until Long got around Johnston on the outside for the lead. That was short-lived however, as Johnston ducked back under Long and took the lead for good. At the checker, it was Johnston, Long, Miller, Matt Kirchen and Damon Place. Long took the four car dash win and Miller took the heat win.

The Spartan Speedway Pure Stock division saw the largest turnout yet for 2009 with 18 cars in competition for the Sunday Slugfest. After a number of attempts at a double file start, the field was started single file with Mike Wines taking the early lead. Andrew Burton, Anthony Williams, Scott Beach and Ed Doutre Jr. gave chase and Burton took over the lead on lap three. Doutre challenged for the lead on lap eight and took the spot away after caution waved. Lonny Saumier worked his way into second, with Beach trying to reel in the top two from the third spot. Saumier drove to outside of Doutre and the pair ran side by side until Doutre got into Saumier handing second over to Chad Lamson. Saumier and Lamson had a battle royale, swapping the lead a couple of times when an altercation between the two resulted in both receiving the black flag. Beach inherited first and on the restart Nick Johnston went to work on Beach for first from the high side, taking the spot away on lap 26. At the line, it was Johnston, Doutre, Nick Lechota, Burton, and Wines. Burton and Doutre scored heat wins.

Seventeen Boss Snow Equipment Pony Stocks lined up for their 25-lap feature with Joe Bates, John Ward, Patrick Denison, Rich Roberts and Zack Mcintosh ready to roll when the green flag dropped. Bates led the first six laps, as three-wide racing was the rule of the day. Brian Beckner took command on lap seven, with Edson Rowley III reeling him in to challenge for the lead from the second- and sometimes the third groove. Denison in third was able to outrun Wayne Beckner Jr. but Beckner Jr. wasn’t able to keep Todd Metz Jr. from taking fourth away on the low side. After 25 laps, it was B. Beckner, Rowley, Denison, Metz Jr. and Beckner Jr. Ward, Roberts, and B. Beckner took home heat wins.

Many drivers did double-duty in the Pony Stock Figure-8 division with Todd Metz Jr. taking the commanding win over Edson Rowley III, Charlie Thom, Ken Dollarhite, and Rich Roberts. Metz lapped all but two cars in 25-laps. The Pure Stock Figure-8 division saw Andrew Burton take the 25-lap feature win with a strong showing by Spartan veteran Figure-8er, David Thorburn, finishing second. Ed Doutre Jr. came home third.
