Saturday May 16th brought another great night of racing to the I-96 speedway. The facility featured a full slate of racing including Road Beaters, Street Stocks, Mini Sprints, UMP Modifieds and the Nesmith Ultimate Late Models.
The 600cc Mini Sprints on the 3/8th’s mile oval was the first feature of the night. Ronald Brown had another dominating performance in the Motorcycle Shop, Insane Tee’s, Shows to go, and Kay’s Bar sponsored machine as he went on to win his third feature win of the season. Jason Holibaugh and Cruze Northrup rounded out the top three of the 20 lap event.
The UMP Modifieds raced the second feature of the night. It was a 20 lap shootout on the I 96 ½ mile speed plant. A four car battle between Jacob Poel, Johnny Deyoung, Todd Feutz and Mark Anderson kept the fans on the edge of their seats as Jacob Poel No. 82 took home the win. It was Poel’s fourth win of the weekend following a heat win earlier in the day at I 96 Speedway as well as a heat and feature win Friday night at Mt. Pleasant Speedway in a brand new home built chassis. Jacob wanted to thank his sponsors Poel Welding and Fabrication, SR Industries, and Poel Blueberry Farm. Rounding out the top three where 2nd place finisher Johnny Deyoung No. 70 and defending track champion Todd Feutz No. 18.
The Ionia Bowl 300 sponsored Hobby Stock 20 lap feature was lead wire to wire by Aaron Wolf No. 08. Wolf held off challenges from last weeks feature winner AJ Ward on the 3/8ths mile oval. After the race Aaron said he wanted to thank his sponsors that make racing every week possible, Hillcrest Farms, Clarksville Feed Store, Fisk Trucking, Berger Chevrolet of Ionia as well as all his friends and family. AJ Ward No. 20 fell just short of winning two in a row coming home in second place. Ron Brillhart No. 77 rounded out the top three with a solid third place finish.
The Nesmith Ultimate Late Model Northern Challenge 40 lap $2,000 to win A feature saw 22 cars take the green flag. Rick Stout jumped out to a early lead in his Wing Motorsports No. 55 late model from his front row starting position and never looked back as he went on to win his second Nesmith Ultimate Late Model feature at I 96 Speedway in 2009. Second place belonged to Hall of Fame driver Kris Patterson in the No. 0 car. 2008 Nesmith National Champion Chip Brindle made the trek from Dalton Georgia to finish 3rd in his brand new Rayburn Chassis that he picked up on his way up from Ga. Following the race Rick said despite already having two wins this season there is still room for improvement in his Wing Motorsports owned machine. Rick would like to thank Roger and Louise Wing, Tom Benson, Northstar Towing and Recovery, and Mike Mouch for bringing the Nesmith series to I 96 Speedway.
The final feature of the night was the fwd 4 cyl Road Beaters. Rob Neiman No. 28 continued to dominate, as he went on to win his third feature win of the season at I 96 Speedway. Neiman’s primary sponsor is No Bull Graphix. John Primm and Scott Rumsey rounded out the top three for the 20 lap feature.
