It was a picture perfect spring day and night that lent itself to great racing action at I-96 Speedway Saturday night. Warm temperatures and a great field of cars gave the fans the action they desired. The preliminary events kept the fans on the edge of their seats. Then the real excitement began.
Feature racing got kicked off with the front wheel drive road beater class won by John Primm No. 11, which is usually driven by his wife Nikki. John picked his way through the field from his 8th starting position to take his place at the front of the field. I asked John to recap the race but being a man of few words, “it was fun!” was all he could say. However the ear to ear grin John was sporting said it all.
Feature number two of the night was the Hobby Stock class, with 16 cars taking the green from veteran flagman Tim Beebe, on the newly configured 3/8ths mile oval. AJ Ward in the No. 20W car made a last lap last corner pass to take the win over Ronald Weirs No. 8W and last weeks feature winner Aaron Wolf No. 08 who finished in third place.
After the race AJ said, “We made a big gamble and put on a new right rear tire. That gave us a lot more stagger and it paid off big time.” When asked what the fans could expect from the hobby stocks next week AJ said, “More of the same door to door down to the wire action!” Ward’s sponsors include, Class A Auto Parts of Ionia, MJ Motors, The Cellar, Ionia Bowl 300, Fowler Lanes, Main St. Bar, and Playing For Keeps Tattoo.
The hobby stocks will be on tap with the World of Outlaws sprint series next Saturday.
The 600cc Mini Sprint feature on the 3/8ths mile oval at I-96 Speedway was a 20 lap shootout. Starting position proved to be very important as Derek Donaldson No. 91D led start to finish holding off Jason Holibaugh No. 04 followed by last weeks feature winner Ronald Brown. Following the race Derek said, “The car started out really good and as the race went on the track got slicker and the car got tighter, I was holding on for dear life!” Donaldson’s sponsors include Rose City Motors of Jackson, Interstate 94 and Phelps. The mini sprints will be in action again in two weeks at I-96 Speedway.
The NeSmith Chevrolet Ultimate Champion Late Models feature was the first taking place on the ½ mile speed plant. Mike Nugent led 19 of his closest competitors to the green flag. A four way battle for the lead ensued for the entire balance of the 25 lap showdown. Joining Nugent in the battle for the lead where Scott Fisk No. 60, Rick Stout No. 55S and eventual race winner and fan favorite Gary Vandermark in the No. 4 machine. In a post race interview, Vandermark said, “I stuck to the bottom and worked my way into the lead. After that I just drove the car as hard as I could and tried to hold those guys off.”
While speaking with NeSmith Chevrolet Ultimate Champion Late Models point leader Rick Stout he said, “We’re still working to get more speed out of the car.
The NeSmith Chevrolet Ultimate Champion Late Models will have the next two weeks off returning to I-96 Speedway on June 13th.
The UMP modifieds showed the fans some great open wheel action for twenty laps in the final feature of the night. Todd Feutz No. 18 started on the pole and never looked back as he went on to win his second modified feature of the season at I-96 Speedway. Feutz said of his win, “I stuck to the bottom groove which was right where I needed to be to stay out front. The car was a little on the tight side but we held on for the win!” Feutz sponsors include Pro-Act Chassis and Graphics and Bob Pierce Race Cars of Michigan. The second place finisher was a happy James Kimmel. “My car was the best it’s been so far this season. I couldn’t be happier to be out there and be able to compete with Feutz, Anderson, Robinson, and Stemler.”
The UMP modifieds will next week off while the World of Outlaws sprints set the half mile speed plant on fire.
If you like blazing fast action I-96 Speedway will be the place to be May 30th.
