Lake Odessa, MI. (June 20, 2009)
Saranac racer Trever Sloan, the 2004 I-96 Speedway Mini stock Champion, won his first ever Ultimate Champion Late Model feature Saturday night. Starting from the pole position Sloan lead all 20 laps on the ½ mile at I-96 Speedway. Driving the Showboat Automotive, IDI Intergraded, 2006 Mastersbuilt chassis, Sloan held off current point leader Rick Stout at the end for the win.
“I want to thank my Dad for all the help he has given me, and to win on Father’s day weekend for him is special. That caution had me worried when I looked at the scoreboard and saw Stout was behind me. To beat these veteran racers, drivers I have looked up to in the past, is really special!” stated the elated Sloan.
The Sloan cousins, Bry and Trevor, brought the 18 car field down for the green flag. While Sloan began to pull away from the field, Mike Nugent took over the second position from Bry Sloan just before the caution flew for debris on the speedway. On lap three, 10th starting Rick Stout had made is way up to the fifth position. On the sixth circuit, Stout passed B. Sloan in turn one on the bottom then in four made a pass on the outside of Scotty Fisk to bring him up to the third position.
Meanwhile, Kris Patterson was on the move making his way up to the eighth position from his 15th starting spot by lap eight. Patterson would make his way up to sixth before he broke on lap 12, bringing out the second caution. This bunched the field up and on the restart, Stout was able to get around Nugent for the second position, but was not able to catch Trever Sloan. Second through fifth looked like this, Stout, Nugent, Scott Fisk, and Dan Hubble. Bill Bray, Gary Vandermark, Roger Wing, Scott Ehlert, and Bill Trueblood Jr. would round out the top ten. Heat races were won by T. Sloan, Vandermark, and Stout.
The U.M.P. Mods put on a great show as they went 30 caution free laps and NASCAR star Ken Schrader was on hand. Lowell, Michigan’s Shannon Fisk and Munith, Michigan’s Jeff Sayles Brought the 17 car field down to the green flag.
Shannon Fisk would jump out to the early lead while Mark Anderson Jumped into the second position from fourth. While Anderson and Fisk checked out on the field, four time NASCAR Cup winner Ken Schrader was moving up from his ninth starting position. On lap six, Schrader pasted defending I-96 speedway modified champion, and current point leader, Todd Feutz for the sixth position.
Back up front during the ninth lap, Fisk jumped the cushion in turn one and Anderson was right there to take the position away from Fisk. On lap 12, Schrader went by Larry Vanderwoude for the fifth position. Then on lap 18 Schrader went by Sayles for the fourth spot. Then on lap 26 Schrader caught third place running Jacob Poel. They battle for a lap, but Poel bobbled in three and Schrader was there to go right around him.
Anderson won by a straight away over Fisk, Schrader, Poel, Feutz, Sayles, Travis Stemler, Jared Guinn, Steve Shellenberger, and Ken Smith rounds out the top ten. Heat races were won by Sayles, Anderson, and Tim Stemler
Now we turn our action to the 3/8 mile with the street stocks. Tim Hotchkiss and Ronnie Mathis brought the 20 car field down for the green flag. Mathis jumped into the early lead. But with a caution on the first lap bunched the field back up as Ronald”the magic man” Wiers and Aaron Wolf were moving up through the field. Lap four found Wolf from his 12th starting spot was already up to fourth.
This put Wolf on the back bumper of Wiers. Multiple cautions on laps seven – nine, put the feature over its time limit. It was green, white, and checkered flags, and Wiers got a great jump on the leader Cody Denny and passed him on the backstretch. A.J. Ward would come home 2nd, Aaron Wolf, Jeff Bissett, Jay Scott, Tim Hotchkiss, William Brandt Jr., Cort Skoog, Steve Piercefield, and Hilary Smith would make up the top ten. Heat races were won by Wiers, Wolf, and Denny
Road Beaters would see Rob Nieman take the lead on lap 4 from John Primm. On lap 17 Nieman fell off the pace and Primm would go on to win the feature. Charles Peterson II, Adam Bernath, Rob Nieman, Scott Rumsey, Jason Feutz, Brad Kress, Brad Harbenski, Steve Wawiernia, and Robert Foster would make up the top ten. Peterson II and Nieman won the heat races.
