Sometimes, less is more.
I-96 Speedway has announced that for the 2010 season, they are moving their weekly racing off the big 1/2 mile oval and onto a brand new 3/8 mile constructed this offseason.
Track owner and promoter Mike Mouch said I-96 Speedway will continue to run special events on the 1/2 mile, but for the weekly divisions; Late Model, Modified, Mini Sprint, Street Stock and Road Beater classes the races will be run on the newly constructed 3/8 mile track.
"With the way the economy is right now, it is hard for drivers to put a motor together for a big half-mile like we have," Mouch said. "If you get into a wreck on a half-mile, you are going to go for a ride, and you are going to end up having to buy a lot of parts. So, I think this is going to save drivers a lot of money.
"We are still going to have the half-mile, on nights like when the World of Outlaws and the SOD Sprints come in. We will probably race on it five or six times. But we want to make it more of a novelty."
Mouch said fans can expect more exciting racing, too. Plus, he said the three-eighths mile will take less time to prepare, so it will result in a more efficient show.
"It's going to be 75 to 100 feet wide and it will have progressive banking," Mouch said. "You can run six to eight cars wide, it's going to be the widest in the state. It should be really fast. The corners will be just as fast as the half-mile."
I-96 Speedway will also be partnering with MARCTimesTV.com to broadcast all its races live on-line and at various local viewing locations.
