The Most Exciting Racing in Michigan, I-96 Speedway, has added a new member to it's team. The MARC Times Racing News & Midwest Racing Scene has learned that Mike Strevel has joined I-96 Speedway as General Manager.
Mike is known through the Great Lakes racing community for his time with Berlin Raceway and before that with the Auto Value Bumper-to-Bumper Sprint Series.
Most currently Mike has been endeavoring to get the Great Lakes Outlaw Late Model Series up and running. The GLLMS has several dates on the 2010 schedule and its cars will be running at numerous tracks across Indiana and Michigan.
The switch to dirt is likely to turn some heads in the racing community, with Mike having spent the majority of his time recently on the pavement. But the real story is Mike started his racing life on dirt.
"The very first racetrack I ever attended was Thunderbird Raceway. I grew up in Muskegon and Thunderbird was where I learned about short track racing." said I-96 Speedway's new General Manager. "Back when Tom Batista owned the Speedway, I had the opportunity to interview him for a radio show I was hosting in Grand Rapids and we struck up a relationship. When his announcer Mark
Cowan left that winter, I was given the opportunity to begin my announcing career."
"I announced at I-96 Speedway from 1993 from 1999, I've called a lot of big races, a lot of memorable events. The first race Kasey Kahne ever ran in Michigan in a Sprint Car was at I-96 Speedway and I was working the booth that night. We've had AMA Motorcycle events, World of Outlaws, just a lot of great memories. You could say I have had more then my fair share of dirt under the finger nails."
For Mike, returning to I-96 Speedway is "a full circle deal here", and he is looking forward to joining the team Mike Mouch has assembled at I-96 Speedway. Strevel will return to the booth in 2010 and join Den Vogel as the voices of I-96 Speedway. "Den's our main man and is going to continue to be the lead announcer and the primary voice of I-96 Speedway, but I'll be looking to give him a break from time to time, save a little wear and tear on the pipes. Probably be a little more participatory then I was at Berlin, but Den's still our guy."
I-96 Speedway heads into the 2010 season with high expectations and the track which claims "The Most Exciting Racing in Michigan" is putting together a schedule events sure to entertain race fans.
The Fastest Show on Dirt returns May 22nd as the World of Outlaw Sprints take to the big 1/2 mile oval for dirt pounding excitiment.
On June 29th, UMP Summer Nationals make their way to Lake Odessa as the finest Late Model teams from the Midwest come to Ionia to take on the best Late Model drivers from Michigan in what surely will be the most competitive field of Late Models seen anywhere in Michigan.
Coming on July 10th, the AMA Pro Grand Nationals will arrive at I-96 Speedway. These flat track bikes put on an amazing, death defying show which must be witnessed to be appreciated.
