It was an absolutely beautiful sunny spring day at the "Level Pebble," more commonly known as Flat Rock Speedway. Saturday saw the track reopen after the long winter for their first open practice of the year. The hard work that the racers have been putting in all winter long was really evident, as the pits were filled with cars from the Super Late Model, Street Stock, Figure 8, and 4 cylinder divisions.
As the season progresses, the cars naturally gain a few battle scars from the tough side by side competition, but it is always a joy seeing them at their finest this time of year. Hearing the engines fire up and seeing the cars on the track just builds up the anticipation for opening night. The Flat Rock Speedway "7 Up Opening Night" will be Saturday April 25, with the Late Models, Street Stocks, and Figure 8 divisions all competing. The racing action will be starting at 7 PM.
One of the most exciting sights to see in the pits was the return of two of the most popular veteran drivers in the Super Late Models, Dick the "Magic Man" Barker, and Royce "The Carolina Flash" Cornett. Both drivers took a break from racing and did not compete last year, but are primed to make up for it with a strong 2009 season. Cornett's No. 8 Varsity Ford sponsored machine looked particularly nice with its bright red and black paint scheme reminiscent of Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s former DEI car. Defending champion Eric Lee was on hand, but only took a few laps before calling it a day.
The Street Stocks were just as impressive, and all the preparation and long hours that were put in was really noticeable in the outstanding appearance of the cars. The No. 82 & 83 Monte Carlo team cars of Rob and Tim Moore were absolutely stunning in their jet black and sparking silver racing colors. Tim finished 2nd in points last year to defending champion Dan Ford Jr., and is focused on improving his position by one spot and taking the title this year. Dan Ford Jr. in his No. 99 and B Main champ Rich Abel were also present to shake down their cars. The Street Stock division is always one of the most popular and competitive classes at Flat Rock with huge fields and close wheel to wheel racing.
Next was the ever popular crowd pleasing Figure 8's with a strong contingent attempting to dethrone the defending Flat Rock & Toledo champion, Dennis "The Rebel" Whisman, in his aptly numbered white & blue No. 1. Winning the championship at both tracks was a major feat for Dennis, and the other drivers are all gunning to ensure that they can come out on top this year.
Last, but not least on the track was the 4 cylinder class headed by defending champion Brad Turner.
