Flat Rock Speedway had another great night of racing on Saturday as the track hosted the Street Stocks, 4 cylinder and Figure 8 divisions on Fan Club Night. The track was gracious enough to provide free admission for members of the Michigan Auto Racing Fan Club (MARFC) and the similar Ohio group called the Dayton Area Race Fans (DARF). The nominal cost of club membership is a fantastic deal for race fans as many of the area tracks provide a special night of free admission to all members throughout the season. Taking advantage of just one of those complimentary nights will easily cover the cost of membership which is a nice perk in these economic times. The track also offered a special family promotion this night that included 4 tickets, 4 hot dogs & drinks, and a program for only $25.
The skies looked threatening for a while, but Flat Rock was able to complete its entire program with no disruptions, and the fans were rewarded with some good hard racing. The Late Models had a rare weekend off, so after the heat races were concluded, the ultra competitive Street Stocks hit the track for their 25- lap A main feature event. Tim Moore, from Wyandotte, Mich., started on the pole in his beautiful black No. 83, and was able to hold off a strong field of contenders to obtain his first win of the season. Moore had some tough traffic to contend with the last several laps, giving both Chad Guinn and Dan Ford Jr. a couple good opportunities to grab the front spot, but neither was able to capitalize as the checked flag waved. Moore was followed across the line by Guinn, Ford Jr., & Rich Frantz.
Tim was beamin
g in victory lane as he thanked his large contingent of family and friends for all their support. Point leader, Randy Demaggio, who is a long time friend and former high school classmate of Tim Moore, finally had his remarkable string of three wins, a 2nd and a 3rd place finish, broken for the first time this season as he was unable to move all the way up to the front, but still finished 5th. Jim Rae, from nearby Carleton, was victorious in a wild 15- lap Street Stock B Main as he had to work his way up from the back of the field. Brad Turner, from Ida, Mich., in his red No. 72 Ford Focus, took an exciting win in the caution free 4 cylinder feature over Matt Brazeau.
The night's action was capped off by a double length 50- lap feature for the Motor City Madmen of the Figure 8 division. Billy Earley was able to come out with the top spot, although he was driving an unfamiliar machine. Earley had blown his motor the previous week, and it looked like he would miss this week's event. He was contacted by fellow competitor Rob Marten during the week and was graciously offered Robbie Loving's backup car which was hastily renumbered prior to the race with Earley's familiar No. 09. Earley was followed across the line by Greg Studt, Loving, Dennis Whisman, and Jeremy Miller with 15 cars finishing the tough grind. Billy was very appreciative of Rob Marten's offer to drive their car and was joined in victory lane by Robbie Loving.
