Toledo Speedway race fans were presented with their first opportunity this season to see the Super Late Models. On Friday of the Memorial Day weekend they enjoyed a great contest as Scott Hantz took the victory in the Big Red Crème Soda Gold Cup 100. Toledo has coordinated its Super Late Model schedule with many of the other tracks to avoid conflicts, and as a result the pits were filled with an impressive 27 of the potent machines for the first of five races at the fast high banked half mile.
Scott Hantz, from Pleasant Lake, Indiana, driving his familiar EMF sponsored white and orange No. 72, was fast qualifier and started 5th due to the inversion. The front row consisted of Brent Jack and Flat Rock regular Dennis Strickland with Johnny VanDoorne and 2008 Glass City 200 winner Harold Fair Jr. in row 2. Harold Fair Jr. was also joined in the race by his teammate & father, Harold Fair, Sr., and driver Andrew Hagen was here all the way from Australia to drive the Brad Keselowski Racing black No. 00.
Strickland pulled out to an early lead at the start over Jack, Fair Jr, VanDoorne, and Hantz. VanDoorne in No. 71, and fan favorite Ron Allen in the No. 88 both ended their races early before lap 20 due to mechanical problems. Jack, Fair Jr., and Hantz had an intense three car battle for 2nd place until Jack slowed with steering problems on lap 33 and went to the pits. Hantz charged past Fair Jr. for 2nd on lap 41 and then passed Strickland for the lead on lap 44. Hantz was able to put a lot of distance between his car and the rest of the field, and by the halfway point, led by a quarter lap over Strickland, Fair Jr., Justin Schroeder, and Jake Francis.
The race had been relatively clean up to that point, but just a few laps later there were a couple of separate incidents. Francis got out of shape exiting turn 2 and hit the inside wall on the backstretch causing heavy damage to the front of his No. 33, but he was able to rejoin the race after repairs. On the ensuing restart, Hagen hit the turn 1 wall putting him out of the race. Once the green flew again, Fair Jr., was able to take advantage and passed Strickland for 2nd on the restart. Jeff Bailey in the No. 0 tangled with the car of Jake Francis on lap 69 and hit the pit road wall very hard entering turn 1 causing extensive damage to his car on both ends.
Harold Fair Jr., in his No. 71, put forth a valiant charge to get right on the bumper of Hantz with 25 to go, but was never able to pull off the pass and Scott ended up taking the win by 5 car lengths. Fair Jr. finished 2nd, followed by Strickland, Mike Root, and Steve Cronenwett Jr. in 5th. Scott Hantz, a former CRA winner & Iceman competitor at Toledo Speedway, capped off an impressive week after also winning the CRA event at Winchester the previous Sunday.
The Late Models were followed by the Factory Stocks with Cory McCaughey as the 20 lap A main winner. He beat Eric Huston, Archie Padgett (who started 17th!), & Dave Arnold Jr, with Kevin Little winning the B main. Both drivers were able to repeat their wins from earlier in the month. Dave Arnold Sr., who was the only entry in the Rollover contest, managed to roll over 2 ½ times giving the fans a big thrill.
