He has one of the most recognizable names in motorsports, Cruz Pedregon.
Generally, when you hear the name , your first thoughts are of 4 second 1/4 miles, 300 mph speeds and the smell of burning Nitro fuel.
But on this Saturday Evening at Oakshade Raceway, Cruz Pedregon was strapping into the No. 75 Advance Autoparts UMP Late Model and taking to the high dirt banks of Oakshade’s 3/8th mile track.
We sat down with Cruz between the Heat and the B-Main to talk about how he ended up in a dirt late model.
“A lot of people don’t know this, but I actually started out racing on the dirt. Before I started drag racing, our family had dirt karts (like a quarter midget) and we raced a lot on the dirt in the mid-80’s.”
“My Dad was drag racer and naturally I progressed into drag racing. That was my first love and drag racing has been very good to me and my family. We’ve made a good living drag racing but I’ve always loved the dirt and its really my favorite type of racing.”
“I was first introduced to Late Models when Tony Stewart invited me to participate in the Prelude to the Dream. I have absolutely fallen in love with the Late Model, they have unbelievable suspensions which hook up like no other car on the dirt, they have 800+ horse power under the hood, Its a very sophisticated car and a lot of fun to drive.”
Cruz had gotten several starts in Late Models over the past couple of years, but it was the Fall of 2008 when he decided he was ready to actually buy and campaign his own Late Model.
“There are a lot of good manufacturers, but I ended up buying a Rocket Chassis from Mark Richards and I’ve gotten the opportunity to work with Brian Ruhlman who has been incredible in helping me figure these cars out and get them set up.”
Our motor is a 417 built by Estes Racing Engines, we have a great engine sponsor in PBM/Erson Cams and with the Rocket Chassis we have a great package to go fast.
Saturday Night was Pedregon’s 4th Oakshade Raceway start, but he was yet to make the A-main, but that didn’t dampen his spirts towards the track.
“This track is really racey. I like that there is a couple of lines. You can learn how to race a car here, I am out here trying to learn how to drive the car. I’m getting better each time out and pretty soon we are going to start making these A-Mains and then we want to start winning some. I have a lot of respect for the guys that do this, anyone can come out and run around and crash one, I want to race one and win one.”
And that folks, is why the best of the best come to Oakshade Raceway.
