The "Bulldog" Gene Hughes

It seems most racecar drivers now days have been around racing for most of their lives while watching their fathers and grandfathers race. This is not the case for The Bull Dog, Gene Hughes. “I started racing 8 years ago at the age of 55. My son and then son in law raced and I always wanted to try it but never had the funds, the time or the skill but after awhile, I just decided to give it a shot.” Gene started out in Mini Stocks then four years later moved up to Street Stocks and just this year has moved to the new Pure Stock class.

Gene has taken things from his life and worked it into his racing career. “I have always been the number 47 because I have 4 children and 7 grandchildren.” And as for the nickname ‘The Bull Dog’? “I was the Mascot for 2 years at my High School and the Mascot was a Bull Dog so it just stuck with me.”

Five weeks ago Gene took a hard hit into the turn 3 wall and destroyed his car. Before the car was towed off the track, Gene had another ride. Tony Vitali has watched Gene race for years and knew that he was in the points lead so he took the car that he himself was going to race and passed it on to Gene. To me, this shows exactly how well respected Gene Hughes is. Gene is still leading in points in the Pure Stock and this is all due to Tony Vitali and his kindness. “If it were not for Tony, I would be sitting in the stands because financially, there is no way I could put another car together. I want to drive the car the best I can and give Tony the championship as the car owner.”

Gene would like to give special thanks to his wife Bea, his daughter Becki, his son Mark and his daughter Teri, who is his biggest fan. A very special thanks goes out to Tony Vitali.

Gene would also like to thank his sponsors. Nelsons Beverage of Warsaw, C & C Fabrication of Claypool, TVHS Lady Viking Basketball Coaches of Mentone, Animal House Daycare of Bristol, Advanced Auto of Warsaw, Triple K Graphics of Mentone, Enyearts Video Taping Service of Libery Mills who provides Gene’s in-car camera, Sue Wert Photography of Milford, Craig Welding and Fabrication of Mentone, USA Muffler of Warsaw and the Sullivan Family of Warsaw.

Good Luck to the ‘Bull Dog’ Gene Hughes as he strives for the Pure Stock Championship and a big Thank You to Tony Vitali from all of us Gene Hughes fans for your unselfishness. Happy and Safe Racing!
