Advanced Property Hangover 100

Mother Nature blessed Michiana with a wonderful late January day as the skies were free of any snowfall and temperatures were unseasonably warm.

p_00329Racers began arriving to the Speedway before the 9am pit gate opening time with Kevin Koscher of nearby Elkhart, IN taking the prize for first in line with his #85 "Run What Ya Brung" Street Stock.

Fans starting arriving around Noon and by 1pm there were over 100 people in the stands and nearly 50 race cars in the pits for the beginning of the event.

Track public address announcer Andrew Hayn giving the innovaction shortly before 1:30pm, the track was clear, the skies were clear and the drivers were ready as Plymouth Speedway launched the 2010 season with the running of the Advanced Property Hangover 100.

With a relative light car count on hand in both the Mini-Stock and Front Wheel Drive divisions, track promoter Tom Smith made the call to run the two classes together in a Four-Cylinder "Run What Ya Brung" event.  The race was not without action as on first lap of the race the No. 21 Dodge Neon of found the turn three wall.  Fortunately, the damage was minor and the race was quickly restarted. 100_0803That was the good news, the bad news was Travis promptly found the turn one wall and this time the damage was a little more severe retiring the car for the day.  Rich Hensley, driving out of South Bend in his outlaw bodied mini-stock was the class of the field and the first heat and first race of the year was won by the white and blue No. 7.

The Street Stock Festival "Run What Ya Brung" heats were next with Owosso Speedway regular Rick Gokee and New Paris Speedway's Brian Wilkinson pacing the field.  The track surface was still a little slick and the drivers in this race showed real skill in keeping their cars off the walls and off each other as a lot of patience and respect was shown during the race.  The No. 22 Late Model of Rich Boal was the fast car of the heat, making his way to the front after just a few laps under the green and holding off Wilkinson to take the checkered flag.

ss-heat2Heat two saw a little more raciness as the sun fought through the haze and the heat from the Hoosier race tires started to bring a little more grip to the drivers and faster times followed.  The No. 13 of Tim Sehr brought the field to the green flag, but very quickly Michael Thayer of Argos, IN driving his No. 14 Late Model got to the front.  Thayer would battle with Shaun Wiltjer driving the No. 67, for the lead.  At the checkered flag it was Thayer, Wilcher and Woods.

The first feature of 2010 was the RWYB 4-Cylinders and Hensley wasted no time getting out front and setting sail on the field.  The battle for second however was hotly contested as the No. 76 of Shawn White, the No. 46 of Caleb Woods and the No. 23 Cody Clubb would all take turns in the best of the rest lead dog spot.  When it came down to the checkered flag, it was again the No. 7 of Henlsey, followed by Woods, White, Taylor in the No. 51 and Clubb.

In the Street Stock RWYB, nearly 20 cars took the green flag and the racing action was hot and drivers were racing like it was season championship night.  More then a little paint was swapped and some fenders were ruffled as the drivers each attempted to secure the first feature win of the 2010 season.
