bus_accidentFor the 2nd time in less then a month, an accident at Columbus Speedway left spectators injured and track officials answering questions about the safety of their facility.

Saturday Night, the Speedway was holding their "Crash-A-Rama", similar to "Night of Destruction" or "Maximum Destruction" type events seen at Michigan Tracks.

During the Figure Eight Bus Race held on the 1/3 mile paved track, witnesses stated that a trailing bus got into the back of the leader, turning the leader and sending the trailing bus head on into the front stretch retaining wall.

Columbus Fire Capt. Scott Krummel, who is in charge of all the medics, said 11 people were transported to area hospitals. He said six were taken to Nationwide Children's Hospital in stable condition, three to Mount Carmel West and two to Grant Medical Center.

He said the injuries appeared to be mostly cuts and bruises and some injured ankles.

Co-owner of the Columbus Motor Speedway said "the safety fence did its job. We're very fortunate no one was more seriously injured. Our hearts and prayers go out to those who are injured."  He is optimistic that the track will reopen for this weekend's races.

The wreck left a 5-foot-wide hole in a 4-foot-high concrete restraining wall ringing the speedway. Flying chunks of the wall hit spectators, although most of the people injured were actually leaning on a fence in front of or at the side of the grandstand, Lupfer said. There is a gap of several feet between the wall and the fence.

Last month, a concrete observation tower collapsed at the speedway, injuring six spectators. The tower was repaired and reopened by the next week.

NOTE : This was very similar to the Toledo Speedway Bus Accident which we also have video of.
